The successor of GT86! The new Toyota GR86 sports car replaces the existing 86

Toyota GR86 sports car is a new rear-wheel drive sports car, the successor to GT86, and its successor will be launched in Europe in late 2021 or early 2022.

Like the GT86, the GR86 is the result of Toyota and Subaru's reiterated cooperation to produce compact sports cars. The latter brand's BRZ model launched the same platform and engine at the end of last year.

GR86 uses the same chassis and engine as BRZ, powered by a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated "boxer" engine, instead of the old 2.0-liter unit.

Toyota has not confirmed the GR86 specifications for the European market, but the Japanese version can produce 232bhp torque and 250Nm torque. The speed red line is 7400rpm, which is 35bhp and 45Nm more than the previous model. The acceleration is much faster, at 6.3 seconds, which is 1.1 seconds faster.

The new engine is paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission , and a six-speed automatic transmission will be provided, both of which provide power to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential.

GR86 and GT86 are based on the same basic platform. The chassis is upgraded by adding reinforced panels and stronger bonding technology to improve the rigidity of the body shell and enhance the operability. The torsional rigidity is increased by 50%. The weight of the whole vehicle is 1,270 kg.

The "GR" in the car's name stands for Toyota's internal tuning department Gazoo Racing, which helped develop the brand's GR Supra sports car and GR Yaris hot hatchback ,Therefore, it is not surprising that Gazoo Racing participated in the development of GR86. The evolution of the

platform means that the GR86 retains the same basic proportions as its predecessor, but the appearance style has evolved to match the purer surface of the new BRZ.

At the front, the design of the headlights and daytime running lights is simpler, and the front surface is smoother. Compared with BRZ, Toyota has equipped a large rectangle between its sports car and Subaru The new front apron of the air intake keeps a certain distance between it and Subaru.

GT86 has a soft top shape, and the chunky rear bumper is equipped with a new diffuser element and dual outlet exhaust. Like the BRZ, the GR86’s engine cover, front wings and roof are all made of lightweight aluminum.

Inside, Toyota equips the new compact 2 + 2 sports car with more technologies, including a 7-inch digital instrument panel unit and an 8-inch touch screen infotainment device, which is the right to the center console and dashboard Part of a complete redesign.

EyeSight driver assistance technology developed by Subaru will provide an automatic version of GR86. Use the front-facing camera to provide support before collision avoidance.
