Jin Guangzhao of the Tang Dynasty was the son of the Li family of Mianchi County. When he was thirteen years old, he became a monk under the seat of Master Lingcan of Baoyun Mountain. When he was nineteen years old, he entered Hongyang Mountain and served under the monk Kasyapa. For three years, in order to serve the monk, he never slept peacefully on the bed, and his clothes were never loosened from his body. He worked very diligently as the monk's waiter. As for the chores such as mowing grass and pounding rice, there is no task that is not done with all one's heart.
He was doing some hard labor like this. One day he asked the monk Kasyapa:
"Master, I want to ask a question, what should a monk do?"
"'Wu Wei' is what monks should do, remember! 'Wu Wei'."
"Since it is called 'Wu Wei', doesn't it mean there is no action or function?" He asked puzzledly.
"If you don't do it, how can you achieve the state of 'inaction'?" The monk's answer was really mysterious.
"If you want to do nothing, how can you create something?"
"Have you not seen that the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment says: 'When living in everything, do not have delusional thoughts; do not give up all delusional thoughts. Live in the state of delusional thoughts without adding understanding; in the absence of understanding, do not discern the truth.' This is the way to start with inaction, do you understand?"
He further asked:
" Are action and inaction one and the same, or are they different? ”
The monk solemnly replied:
“For people with Prajna intelligence, it can be likened to: gaining light is like using gold to cast various utensils. From the perspective of gold itself, it does not originally have various shapes. Gold is still gold after all. But using things that have been made of gold looks different in appearance. The essence of gold has become one, as if it were the same thing without any difference. This principle means that gold is often not something else, but there is nothing else that can be obtained from the essence of gold. Gold is like inaction, and using gold to make various forms of things, such as gold rings, gold bracelets , and gold rings, is action. So let me ask you now: Are gold and things made of gold the same or are they different? Therefore, the sutra also says: "In the conditioned world, it shows the unconditioned dharma without destroying the conditioned phase; in the unconditioned world, It shows the conditioned method without distinguishing the nature of non-action. 』So the Tao is doing nothing but doing nothing; the Buddha is non-responding and unresponsive. Although there are so many different names as Ganges Sand , they are still the same in the end. Although the feeling is different from person to person, the appearance is the same body after all. Do you understand? "
After listening to the monk's instructions, Guangzhao decided to spend his whole life in the mountains and forests, enjoying the purpose of doing nothing. I heard people talk about the scenic beauty of Qingliang Mountain, so I was very excited to visit the mountain. However, due to the war in the northwest, the road was difficult to travel, so I had to go to Gushe Mountain to seek advice from Zen Master Chao. After a little enlightenment from Zen Master Chao, I suddenly realized the truth that "the three realms are one mind, and there is no difference." In the second year of Dali, I came to Wutai Mountain as I wished, and settled down at the Bodhisattva Summit in front of Beitai Vajra Cave. Once he meditated into silence and saw golden light flying down from north platform , a golden lotus and the incarnations of Buddhas appeared in the middle platform. The golden light of the Buddhas illuminated the top of his head. The incarnation Buddha stretched his arms and rubbed his head and said:
"Good man! You are now good at entering Vajra Samadhi. From now on, you will be named Jin Guangzhao. You should wash your heart with the water of Prajna. Don't fall into the mysterious way and give birth to any stereotypes."
Enlightenment asked:
"Are the bodies of Buddhas conditioned? Or are they inactive? Are they animate? Or are they inanimate?"
The transformed Buddha answered him:
"Good man, the bodies of Buddhas are separated from all speech, and their minds are forever cut off, like a fire gathering together, with no room for them. To distinguish this and that like you do is still a kind of drama."”
After saying this, he disappeared. Starting from the incredible feeling that appeared when he entered concentration this time, the light shone in the four majesties, that is, walking, standing, sitting and lying down, and always abiding in the golden light samadhi. It was not until the age of seventy-two that he reported his death.
