Monk Fayi is a disciple of Zen Master Dahui. He has not yet realized the truth after practicing Zen for decades, and he is very anxious.
Once, the Zen master asked him to go out for work, which took about a year. Fa thought: It took so long, but he had not made any progress in meditation. Isn’t this was wasting time! So I felt very distressed.
His friend, Monk Zong Qian, heard him telling these troubles and comforted him, "I'll go with you! I can also help you practice Zen on the way!" Monk Fayi was very happy, so the two set off.
On the way, Monk Fayi could not stand the fatigue of wading through mountains and rivers, and he repeatedly quarreled to go back. Monk Zong Qian comforted him and said, "Since we have determined to come out to study, we should stick to it. Besides, we have already walked such a long way, it is not easy. If we give up halfway now, it would be a pity." Monk
Fayi said, "But we will be very hard to go on like this. I'm afraid I can't stand it and will die halfway!" Monk
Monk Zong Qian comforted him and said, "No, why not do this. From now on, if there are things that can be done for you along the way, I will definitely do it for you. But there are five things that I can't help even if I want to help." Monk
Fayi hurriedly asked, "What are the five things? Monk
Monk Zong Qian replied very naturally: "Eat, sleep, shit, pee, and walk." ”
After listening to the words of Monk Zong Qian, Monk Fayi finally realized that he never dared to say things like hard work again.
