Zen Master Fo Guang is preparing to go out to beg for alms. Before leaving, he reminded his disciples, saying, "You must do something to encourage merit before I come back."
In the evening, Zen Master Fo Guang came back, and the disciples rushed to report their achievements in recruiting merits to the Zen Master.
The first disciple Pudao said proudly: "Master! Today there is a great donor who donated 100 taels of silver. He said we can use these liang to build a Grand Historian temple."
The second disciple Pude heard this and also reported: "Master! Today, Mr. Chen from the city came to visit you. I took him to tour the halls everywhere, and he presented us with the annual Taoist food!"
Then, the incense lantern master, Zhike Master, etc. in the temple explained the kindness of believers to Zen Master Fo Guang. After taking turns to talk, the disciples were waiting for Zen Master Fo Guang to appreciate it.
However, Zen Master Fo Guang's face became worse and worse. After pausing for a long time, he frowned and taught the disciples: "It seems that you all have worked hard. Unfortunately, you have begged too much, so naturally you have no public morality."
Everyone was puzzled after hearing this and asked: "Master! Why is the more you beg for alms, the worse it is?"
Zen Master Fo Guang said: "You use your brain and think about it carefully. If we store all the existing money and give it to the believers, the believers can become rich, and then Buddhism will become rich." Speaking of this, the Zen Master looked at the disciples.
disciples nodded with a little understanding, and Zen Master Fo Guang continued: "We cannot often ask this believer to donate this merit and ask that believer to sponsor that Buddhist affairs. Isn't this going to kill the chicken to obtain the Yang? You are really stupid. If one day the believers are too burdened, who else can Buddhism expect to protect the Dharma?" After hearing this, the disciples all lowered their heads in shame.
