At the time of the Song Dynasty, there was a Zhiyuan Temple in the capital, and there was a monk named Zhiyan.

Zhiyan is from Xiliangzhou. He became a monk and practiced at a very young age and is famous for his diligence. Later, Chiyan left Kyoto and traveled to various countries. Wherever he went, he learned Zen from monks from all over the world. Over the years, Zhiyan not only mastered the sutras and treatises of various Buddhist sects, but also obtained many rare scriptures in the world.

"These scriptures are very rare, they are all original texts without translations, and people in China cannot understand them. It's a pity that this is so, so why don't I help translate them into Chinese."

Back in the capital, Zhiyan was determined to translate these precious scriptures, and many masters in the temple came to help.

"How serious, Master Zhiyan!" The ghosts and gods passing by knew that he was the monk Zhiyan, so they remembered him silently and worshiped him secretly. Zhiyan worked hard day and night to translate sutras and treatises and strived for the spread of Buddhism. Not only was he supported by the monks and lay people, but even the invisible ghosts and gods respected him very much.

At this time, there was a high official in Piling named Xiao Sihua. Once, his wife, Liu, got a disease and had been lying in bed for a long time. She often saw a group of ghosts running around and shouting by the bed. Liu was very scared, which made the condition worse. So, Xiao Sihua and invited Master Zhiyan to his home to preach to his wife.

Just as Master Zhiyan walked to the outer room, Liu saw the ghosts scattered, and his condition immediately felt three points better. After Master Zhiyan entered the house, he explained the essentials of the Buddhist scriptures to his wife and converted to Buddhism for her. The wife felt comfortable all over the place and almost all of her illnesses over the years.

At this time, the lady immediately got up and got out of bed. The couple knelt on the ground and bowed to thank Master Zhiyan.

Master Zhiyan said: "I don't need your treasures to thank you. I just hope you can get more contact with Buddhism and cultivate your body and nature with the Five Precepts and Ten Good Deeds. Ghosts and gods will naturally respect you. If you really want to express your gratitude with treasures, why don't you to poor families!"

Master Zhiyan, who is indifferent to fame and fortune, never accepts gifts from believers' money and treasures. Even if you have the money offered by believers, they will give to others at will.

Master Zhiyan is taciturn and does not want to talk about his own affairs. Therefore, although he has many praiseworthy behaviors and has done many good things for people, he has not left relevant texts to record, which has not passed down Master Zhiyan's virtues.

When he was seventy-eight years old, Master Zhiyan died of his sleep without any illness and had a very peaceful face.

At that time, in the Song Dynasty, all holy monks died with cremation.

However, although Zhiyan has practiced for many years and is rigorous in the courts, it is not known to most people, so the monks in the temple have to move his body to the cemetery of ordinary monks.

But strangely, his body suddenly became as heavy as a mountain, and no matter how hard he lifted it, he couldn't move a minute.

"Maybe Master Zhiyan was an old practitioner during his lifetime, but we don't know."

"Yes! Just translating Buddhist scriptures has made great merits!" The monks in the temple discussed.

"Maybe we should bury him in the way of the holy monk."

So the monks changed their minds and wanted to carry his body to the cemetery of the sage to cremate. It’s strange that everyone has not given much strength, but Master Zhiyan’s body seems to have no weight, which makes the monks who helped carry the coffin feel tired at all. They are all amazed and said that the merits of keeping precepts and practicing are really incredible!
