Anshigao is the first foreign monk to spread to China and speak of all the Abhidharma teachings and meditation methods.
An Shigao, whose real name is Qing, was originally the Prince of Anxi Kingdom. He believed in Buddhism since childhood. When he was about to ascend to the throne, he became a monk and practiced Taoism, and gave way to his uncle. He studied Abhidharma carefully and practiced meditation, and thus became a master of his generation.
Here introduces some Abhidharma. The key point is to use the four divisions to organize all Dharma meanings and explain the meaning of the self-empt Dharma and the Dharma-excellent Dharma and the Dharma-exchange Heart Chakra.
An Shigao and Emperor Huan of Han came to Luoyang in the early years of Jianhe (147), and soon became well-versed in Chinese. At that time, Buddhism was introduced to mainland China, and for a considerable period of time, there were some believers in the palace and society. Although they mainly pursue sacrifices and pray for blessings, they also have practical requirements for practice. An Shigao translated various sutras and treatises for them about the meditation and contemplation method. An Shigao's translation work probably ended in the period of Han Lingdi Jianning (around 170). Afterwards, he traveled to Yuzhang, Xunyang , Kuaiji and other places, and later magical stories about him were circulated in various places.
The most famous one is the story of An Shigao paying off his life's debts to repay his previous life.
The story is recorded in "Biography of the Empressed Monk ". An Shigao has always remembered his past life. He said that he was also a monk in his previous life. At that time, he had a classmate who felt very angry. When begging for begging, as long as the donor's donation does not suit his own wishes, he will feel resentful. An Shigao once persuaded him several times in his previous life to change his temper, but this classmate never repents at all and still does his own way.
An Shigao's previous life saw this, and sighed and said to his classmate, "You will definitely turn into an ugly alien after death. If I at that time, I will definitely save you."
After saying that, An Shigao went to Guangzhou in his previous life. At that time, the thieves were in chaos in Guangzhou. One of the boys said as soon as he met him, "I finally waited for you!" So he drew his sword and slashed at An Shigao's previous life. In this regard, An Shigao did not hide from his previous life, but just smiled indifferently and was killed. Before his death, he said, "I used to owe you a life, so I came from afar to repay your past debts. Your resentment is the resentment you have accumulated in the past."
After An Shigao's death in his previous life, he was reborn as the prince of Anxu Kingdom. Later he came to China and completed the work of translating scriptures. Afterwards, he prepared to go to Lushan to save his former classmates.
Nothing to say anything along the way, An Shigao soon came to the Gongting Lake at the foot of Mount Lu. He heard that there was a temple here, which was particularly effective. One day, people near Mount Lu went to the temple to pray for welfare, and An Shigao was waiting on the boat. The temple god of the temple took the opportunity to say to these people, "There is a monk who practices on the boat, and you also invite him to the temple." Everyone was very shocked and hurried to the boat to invite An Shigao.
The temple god saw An Shigao and told him that he was actually that classmate, who fell into an alien shape in this life because of the sin of hatred during his lifetime. Now that life span is about to end, the huge and ugly body after death will definitely pollute the clear lake water. So the temple god decided to find a place to stay dead. However, because he was worried about falling into hell after his death, the temple god hoped that An Shigao could help him to save him.
After hearing this, An Shigao smiled slightly and said to the temple god that the purpose of his trip was to save him. Then he let the temple god show his true form. It turns out that the temple god is a big python, with a huge body like Great Wall , and people don’t know how long it is. After seeing this, An Shigao quickly recited the Buddhist scriptures to save him. The python cried like rain and disappeared in a moment.
At dusk, a beautiful boy boarded the boat board, knelt in front of An Shigao, and accepted An Shigao's wishes, and then disappeared without a trace. An Shigao told the people on the same boat that this beautiful boy was the temple god and he had abandoned the shape of a python.
Later, people found a huge dead python in the grass in Shanxi. It is said that this is the past life of the beautiful boy.
After saving the python, An Shigao arrived in Guangzhou again, looking for the boy who killed him in his previous life.
The boy at that time had turned into an old man with white hair. An Shigao told the old man about his life decades ago and recounted his karma before many lives. After hearing this, the old man burst into tears. The two shook hands and said goodbye, and the grudges in their previous lives were gone.
An Shigao said: "I still have the remaining retribution for my sins. Now I should rush to Kuaiji to repay my life debt from my past lives."
The old man followed An Shigao to Kuaiji. As soon as he entered the town, he happened to encounter a chaotic incident of fighting and killing. He suddenly saw the troublemaker accidentally hit An Shigao in the head, and An Shigao fell to the ground and died immediately.
The old man witnessed An Shigao's death twice, and thought of the cause and effect truth, so he began to study Buddhism diligently and tell everyone about his personal experience.
An Shigao's reputation has become even higher.
