Zen Master Zhichang in Xinzhou Enlightenment Cause and Condition
Zen Master Zhichang, Sixth Patriarch The Dharma heir of Master Huineng, Xinzhou (the capital is located in Shangrao, Jiangxi) 2 people, who became monks in childhood and were determined to understand their minds and nature.
One day, he came to Caoxi to attend the ceremony of the Sixth Patriarch.
The Sixth Patriarch asked, "Where did you come from? What do you want to seek?"
Zen Master Zhichang said, "Students recently worshiped monk Datong, and were given the meaning of seeing the nature and becoming a Buddha. He was doubtful. When he arrived at Jizhou , he was confused and asked to send monks to the monk, and he wished to accept kindness."
The Sixth Patriarch said, "What do you have to say? Please show me, I will prove it to you (What did monk Datong tell you, tell me, I will tell you the truth and falsehood)."
Zen Master Zhichang said, "I have arrived in the first three months and have not received any teachings. I thought it was a Dharma, so I went to the abbot alone at midnight to worship and mourn.
Datong said, "Do you see the void?"
replied, "See."
said, "Do you see the void have a appearance?"
replied, "Do you see the void have a appearance?"
replied, "What is the void has invisible appearance?"
replied, "What is the void? '
He said: 'Your nature is like the void. Looking back at your own nature, there is nothing to see, this is called right view. Nothing can be known, this is called true knowledge. There is no blue and yellow length, but you can see the origin of pure and the body is bright, which is called seeing the nature and becoming a Buddha, also known as Pure Land , also known as Tathagata Knowledge and views. 'Scholars have heard of this, but they still have not decided. I beg the monk to show you the instructions, so I will definitely stagnate."
The Sixth Patriarch said: "What the teacher said still has the knowledge, so I let you Not yet finished. I now tell you a verse:
I don’t see a Dharma that has no sight, it is like a floating cloud covering the sun.
I don’t know that a Dharma that keeps empty knowledge is like lightning in the vast void.
This knowledge and insight are exciting, and how can you understand the problem of mistakenly admitting it?
You should know that you are wrong, and your spiritual light will always be revealed. ”
Zen Master Zhichang heard the verse and felt it suddenly. I immediately wrote a verse to present the realm of enlightenment, saying:
"Arise without any reason, and seek Bodhi with the appearance.
The emotion has a thought to enlighten, and I will never be confused when I was in the past.
The source of self-nature consciousness will flow with the illumination.
If you don't enter the ancestor's room, you will be confused and interested."
After hearing Zen Master Zhichang's verse of enlightenment, the Sixth Patriarch listened to Zen Master Zhichang's enlightenment verse and then sealed the spear.
One day, Zen Master Zhichang entered the room to worship the Sixth Patriarch again.
Zen Master Zhichang asked: "The Buddha said the Three Vehicles, and said it was the best. The disciple has not understood it, so I wish to teach it."
The Sixth Patriarch said: "You should observe your original mind and do not be attached to the external Dharma appearance. There are no four vehicles of Dharma, and the human mind will be different. Seeing, hearing, reciting, understanding the meaning of Dharma is the middle vehicle, practicing according to the Dharma is the Mahayana, practicing all dharmas, possessing all dharmas, and hearing, and gaining nothing. It is called the highest vehicle. Vehicle is the meaning of action, and it is not verbally contested. You must practice by yourself, and don't ask me. At all times, your nature is free."
After Zen Master Zhichang realized the truth, he continued to stay with the Sixth Patriarch and served the Sixth Patriarch until the Sixth Patriarch entered silence.
