While many photos of the past present everything before the modern era as stoic and polite, the photos collected here subvert this notion by showing some of the more candid moments in history that have not been recorded in history. Each new photo allows you to see something real from the past, rather than a nauseatingly oversaturated moment.

will travel through the most fascinating moments in history, and the journey will take you behind the scenes of world history.

However, Jackie and John’s style sets them apart, don’t you think?

Life in Los Angeles in the 1960s was a halcyon time of fun in the sun, with people spending days walking up and down the Sunset Strip in search of good deals and a good time. Los Angeles was experiencing unprecedented prosperity for the era, the Dodgers had just moved to the city in 1958, and the town was growing at a breakneck pace. The city was like a tree waiting to be picked, and it was clear that despite the different times, some things would never change. In Southern California , the sun is still a harsh mistress and friends always have a great time taking long summer walks across the city, and the only real question is where will anyone find those shorts? They are so trendy.

Prince Charles was born in 1948 and lived one of the most luxurious lives in the history of the monarchy. Not only was he born in Buckingham Palace , he was also baptized by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace. He became heir apparent and Duke of Cornwall in 1953 when his mother and her sister Princess Margaret ascended the throne. While this was too much for a young boy, it was nothing compared to the spotlight he had to face when it was announced that he would be the first member of the royal family to attend school rather than study with a private tutor. He later said of his studies: " I was lucky because I believe it taught me a lot about myself, and my own abilities and disabilities. It taught me to accept challenges and take initiative."

These students from the Army Training Corps at the University of Michigan, are learning how to climb telephone poles, which isn't really what many people think of as a life skill, but it makes sense to have a lesson as important as climbing telephone poles.

These students were learning how to climb telegraph poles and repair telephone lines at the end of World War I. At that time, it was very important for people to understand how to set up telephone lines and ensure that communication methods remained open. How long do you think these students were there?

From 1858 to 1947, the British ruled India, making the entire country part of the British Kingdom. Many English colonists moved to this gem of England to make a life for themselves. They married, had children, and stayed long after Britain severed ties with India. At the time of the takeover, the British Empire thought they were spreading freedom.

Obviously, British imperialism had many shortcomings, especially the way the Victorians treated the natives.Although England and India parted ways in '47, relations between the two countries remain tense - understandably so after nearly 100 years of bickering.

It is no exaggeration to say that pasta plays an important role in diet and income. Long before pasta was mass-produced in factories, it was made by hand and dried in the open air. Although it was (and still is) incredibly cheap to make, pasta was part of everyone's diet - not just the country's poorer sects.

One of the reasons pasta is so popular in Italy is that the country's strict Catholic faith prohibits eating meat on certain days. Pasta makes the perfect dish when Italians are looking for something filling, but it won't get them into trouble.

In 1971, 13-year-old Melanie Griffith was at home with her family pet lion, Neil.

Before she starred in Working Girl with Harrison Ford, she lived with her superstar mother, and her pet lion, Neil. Griffith's mother, Tippi Hedren, was encouraged to bring home a lion after a movie about the big cats was made in the 1970s, something that would be hard to imagine happening today.

Photos from the time show Neil living like a family. He and Griffith slept under blankets and hung out in the living room with Hedren. Although no one was hurt, Griffith later said that owning a lion was "incredibly stupid."

Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe wrote about Raven's House in 1844, near the intersection of West 84th Street and Broadway in present-day New York City.

Could Edgar Allan Poe have written "The Raven" in any other house? This Gothic building does look like a house prepared by a ghostly writer who, while he was writing this poem in the house, was living in the farmhouse owned by Patrick Brennan, his then-wife and mother-in-law. Poe likely needed space to express his ideas about the language and logic that populate the work.

The house has since been demolished, with only a plaque where it once stood letting passers-by know the location of this literary landmark, and it seems anyone wishing to escape the dreary crows of midnight must knock on a different room door.

Becoming the first female bus driver for the Chicago Transit Authority wasn't easy. According to Mary Wallace, she had to berate the CTA for hiring her. Despite their excuses, she ended up getting the job and it seemed cool, she said: "I worked at the Planning and Placement Center when I was in college and we had the CTA. Job orders for bus drivers so I decided I wanted to check it out for myself and I did, I went there for three years and they kept saying no we can't hire women, we don't have facilities for women so you have to do something else and said I don't want to do anything else, I want to drive a bus. After three years of harassment, they finally sent me a letter saying they would consider (not hire) me. They asked me to come down and take a test and I didn't hear from them for about three or four months and then I got a letter saying I would be hired as a driver and after that, the rest is history".

Michelle Obama, surnamed Robinson, long before she became First Lady, Growing up in a South Shore bungalow in Chicago, Illinois, her father was a city water pump operator, which didn't bring a lot of money into the family, but it was enough to keep the Robinson family afloat. Everyone in the Robinson family was smart, especially Michelle, who ended up skipping second grade before studying French and biology.

Growing up, Robinson's father had multiple sclerosis, which inspired her to focus on her studies and stay out of trouble, and she went on to attend Chicago's first magnet school before going to Princeton University.

Taking pictures in 1860 was nothing like taking a quick photo on a smartphone today. Photographers couldn't just bring up portrait mode and start clicking. They had to set the camera's aperture and exposure to perfectly capture their subject. The long exposures required to capture the photo made it impossible for people to smile - if they did, everything would be blurry.

Early Photo Techniques explains why the couple, looking so gloomy in the photo, was most likely told to sit in these positions for as long as it took for the photo to be taken.

No matter which '90s craze moves you the most, Beanie Babies inspired the most ardent fans among them, and collectors hoarded their piles of stuffed animals, adding to the bubbles until the pieces fetched astronomical prices. After this Las Vegas couple separated, they sold their The Beanie Baby series went to court.

The pair couldn't agree on who got which hats in the nearly $5,000 collection, and the collection had to be spread out on the floor to be divided one by one by Family Court Judge Hardcastle in hopes the couple could sell their collection before the bubble burst, Huffington Post reported.

If you travel through the Himalayan countryside soon, you will notice a wizened old goat sitting on the top of a mountain - that is the Himalayan goat. Although these creatures are similar to goats in the Americas, they have shorter legs and smaller heads, and they live at higher altitudes to avoid predators.

Goats of this species, which can weigh up to 200 pounds, are relatively peaceful creatures that do most of their feeding and movement near dusk or sunrise to avoid animals that might want to put goats on their menu.

France has always been the focus of fashion, and the country was definitely flexing its fashion muscles with these gorgeous outfits in the early 20th century. The early 1900s was known as the Belle Epoque (beautiful era), and every girl wanted to be the most luxurious creature walking along the Siena River.

During this time, women wore lots of ruffles, bustles, and any other type of embellishment that would make their clothes stand out, making them some of the most striking figures in France. To obtain such luxurious clothing, women travel to Paris between March and September in order to find the perfect outfit in the city's numerous stores.

It's not uncommon for a mother and daughter to have such a close relationship. However, relationships like this don't play out in the tabloids every day. Fisher has been open about her strained relationship with her mother growing up, telling Oprah: "Families are organized [around] parents, and often families are organized around raising children," despite the two often feuding. In 2011, Reynolds talked about falling in love with her daughter even more after Fisher was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

She said : The lowest point in my relationship with Carrie and myself, was probably when we found out she was sick, or she had this mental health issue, and it was something that would always be with her. It was very difficult, how was she going to live? How can I help her in life? All I can do is love her and always will.

It took Fisher and Reynolds decades to reconnect, but toward the end of their lives they were extremely close, with Fisher saying she was fearless because of her mother, who died within a day of each other in 2017.

As unlikely as these best friends may seem, they have been through ups and downs together during their long and strange lives. The bears rescued from a drug lord in Atlanta, Georgia Ballou, Leo the lion, and Shere Khan the tiger, were extremely malnourished when they were discovered by authorities and had little chance of survival.

After the three animal companions were brought to Noah's Ark Sanctuary in Locust Grove, Georgia, they were able to live normal lives and play in harmony. After Leo passed away in 2016 and Shere Khan joined him in 2018, Baloo was the last member of the trio, but he was surrounded by many friends at Noah's Ark Sanctuary.

The United States is not the only country that has long relied on coal. The Belgian economy relied heavily on the mining industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The ore these people mined every day was an important part of the country's economy. Most of the mining occurred in the sillon industriel or "industrial valley" near Wallonia.

Like their counterparts out west in West Virginia miners would descend into the mines for a long and dangerous day's work before returning to the surface clean and ready to start over again.

Born in France in 1883, Coco Chanel had a different beginning than many who wore her clothes could imagine. Chanel (Chanel), whose mother died when she was 12, was raised in an orphanage rather than on a lavish estate or in the heart of the Parisian fashion world, was abandoned by her father, who couldn't or didn't want to care for her.

The nuns who raised her taught Chanel to sew, which would come in handy for the rest of her life, and Chanel briefly worked as a nightclub singer at Vichy and Moulins, where she was known as "Coco" before she turned to fashion. She opened her first shop selling hats on Rue Cambon in Paris in 1910, and by the 1920s she had become an international star.

How do you get people to visit your zoo? Of course letting the animals roam throughout the city, according to Lynda Burrill, the zoo's animal registrar and former bird keeper, the penguin escapes weren't about promoting business, but once the tuxedo-clad birds started waddling around the streets of Edinburgh, the zoo didn't exactly avoid them to stop them.

The penguins actually get police escorts around the city to make sure the birds are minding their business and the locals aren't feeding them too much fried food. What a great day out for these exotic birds.

Although Kiss had been hanging around New York since the early 1970s, they didn't become an international sensation until the release of "Alive!," in 1975. This landmark live album rocketed the band into becoming the best-known band in the world, and while many of their songs were about rave and rock 'n' roll, their dramatic appearance attracted legions of young fans.

Kiss fans of all ages have always been diehard fans of the group, so it must have been exciting to see Gene "The Devil" Simmons up close and personal, and I hope he didn't try to breathe fire during this appearance.

Now, this is a fluffy puppy, or rather, a big fluffy dog. This large breed was bred in Tibet centuries ago to be used as guard dogs for livestock. Males of the species can grow up to three feet tall and weigh up to 160 pounds—imagine jumping into your lap after a long day at work.

Tibetan Mastiffs are still being bred today, and while they still guard livestock, they have also become domesticated and can be found in just as many homes. They do look like fun to cuddle, but bathing them can be a struggle.

Imagine walking into a McDonald's and having a meal for less than five dollars. Back in 1974, that dream became a reality, and a hungry diner could pop into a Mickey Ds and dig out the change in his pocket for something tasty.

McDonald's was founded by the McDonald brothers in the late 1940s, but after being acquired by Ray Crock in 1961, the company went global and began serving burgers internationally. By the 1970s, there were more than 40,000 restaurants worldwide. In 1974, McDonald's was still a fast-food restaurant specializing in lunch and dinner, but that all changed a year later with the introduction of the Egg McMuffin.

When you think of Native Americans who lived in teepees and hunted bison, you think of the Kiowa. By the early 19th century, after generations of traveling from states such as Colorado and western Montana, the Kiowas were living full-time on the Great Plains. The name Kiowa is believed to be derived from the group's name, Kai-i-gwu, meaning "chief figure."

They are definitely an important group in the social fabric of indigenous peoples, especially when it comes to relationships with tribes that have gone down in history for their aggressiveness. The Kiowas were close friends with the Comanches, Arapahos, and Southern Cheyennes, with whom they had shared reservations since the late 1800s.

When you think of bats, this is the creature of the night that comes to mind. But don't worry, these giant bats aren't trying to suck your blood while you sleep, they're actually just a large fruit bat that, unfortunately, is endangered in modern times. These giant bats grow to a ridiculous size, with their wingspan extending anywhere between 4 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 7 inches, which is longer than most humans.

These bats live a secretive life, but they are known to fly up to 25 miles overnight to forage for food, choosing to hide in forests during the day. They are rarely seen even in their native Philippines as they really don't like to deal with humans. If you see one of these big guys hanging around, have no fear, just throw in an extra fig .

Long before the start of World War II , Jews fled Germany and surrounding countries as quickly as possible. However, no one at the time knew how terrible Hitler was, and almost every country they immigrated to didn't want them there. In 1936 the United States was still in the midst of the Great Depression, and many citizens believed that the influx of refugees would put a strain on the economy that we would never go back to. Philosopher Hannah Arendt described the plight of Jewish refugees this way: Refugees, nowhere to be welcomed, and nowhere to be assimilated. Once they leave their homeland, they remain homeless, once they leave their state, they remain stateless; once they are deprived of their human rights, they have no rights and become the scum of the earth.

Although Westerners have been traveling to Papua New Guinea since the late 19th century, with Italian naturalist and explorer Luigi Maria d'Albertis leading the way, there are still many unanswered questions about the region's tribes. Many tribal people in the area believe outsiders bring evil spirits, so it's a wonder that these four generations would allow themselves to be photographed.

The tribesmen of New Guinea still hunt with bows and arrows, a practice passed down from generation to generation, and they are not afraid to point their weapons at outsiders who have not yet established themselves as a peaceful people.

Mark Twain was one of America's most outstanding thinkers. His wisecracks still captivate readers today, and he was a leading advocate for domesticated animals, especially the world's canine populations. One of the few poems Twain ever attempted was for his late dog Burns. Shortly after the dog's death, Twain wrote these simple lines: "She lived a quiet and harmless life in Hartford, far away from the wild conflicts."

Throughout his life, Twain kept a large number of pets, many with ridiculous names that only he could have thought of. His animals were named Pestilence and Famine, Sackcloth, Billiards, and Prosperity.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, you have to admit that this photo is scary. Journalist Brett Meisner snapped this photo of singer-songwriter Tom Petty while traveling in Paris in the late 1990s, and the strange figure in the background is said to be none other than the spirit of The Lizard King himself. When Meissner saw the photo, he was understandably upset. He wrote: What I discovered tonight made me rethink my theory about the "monster in the closet". Before tonight I did not believe in spirits or other "supernatural" things. While sorting through my photo archive for some upcoming projects, my assistant created a photo I took a few years ago at Jim Morrison's gravesite in France. I had seen this photo before but I had never noticed what I noticed tonight. Anyway, I'm confused and probably scared right now...

The majestic beauty of Niagara Falls is undeniable. Straddling the U.S.-Canada border, the state park offers more than just a classic new take on the majestic waterfall, and while you can no longer ride barrels over the cliffs, you can hike miles of hiking trails.

Beyond sheer magnificence, the falls also provide hydroelectric power to the country, with the water from the falls flowing at a staggering 2,400 cubic meters per second, reaching its peak in early summer. So if you travel to upstate New York in June or July, you'll see the falls at the peak of their power.

At only 21 years old, Winston Churchill was already a well-trained soldier and served in the army. However, he did not agree with all of England's directives at the time. Before he joined the 4th Hussars for a visit to India, he wrote to his mother, describing his trip to South Asia disparagingly: I consider it a useless and unprofitable exile to go to India, I feel that I have committed an act of lazy folly which I will regret for the rest of my life, there is no use preaching the gospel of endurance to me, other young men are now running, what chance do I have of catching up.

Although electricity powers our homes and nearly all modern appliances, that doesn't mean it's our friend. On July 17, 1967, Rocco Morabito (Rocco Morabito) photographed utility worker J.D. Thompson mouth-to-mouth with his co-worker Randall G. Champion, known as the "Kiss of Life."According to Thompson, the day the photo was taken was like any other, until his coworker accidentally grabbed a live wire, telling NBC: He grabbed the hot wire with four fingers and [the electricity] came out of his - I think it was his left foot, and it blew a hole where it came out of his foot.

Built in 1916, the Pennsylvania-class battleship had a long life before she exploded during the raid on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. During World War I, the Arizona monitored the British east coast and prided itself on being one of the few fuel-fuelled ships of the time. In 1929, the Navy updated the ship's deck armor, boilers, turbines, guns, and fire control devices.

When Pearl Harbor was attacked, the Arizona was hit by a bomb that detonated a powder magazine and sent the entire ship crashing in flames. 1,177 officers and crew died on the Arizona that day, and the wreckage still lies at the bottom of the harbor.

Before 1861, people living in Sweden had to go to the post office to collect their mail, which not only caused a backlog of envelopes and parcels like the Royal Mail did, but also caused a lot of pain for those who weren't nimble enough to travel. Fifteen years later, the profession of rural postmen was implemented, these brave souls traveling across the countryside delivering mail to people who were not on the normal routes.

Initially, rural postmen made their deliveries on foot, and anyone using a horse-drawn carriage had to pay out of pocket. But by 1900, rural post office operators were using bicycles for transportation, and it's unclear whether the guy could hold a penny.

It wasn't just the Americans who fought to retake Guam, it was the Americans who had their paws on the ground. Lieutenant William R. Putney serves as both the dog platoon commander and the veterinarian for all war dogs on Guam.

Dog platoons were deployed around the island to hunt for snipers and traps, while searching foxholes and relaying information to their human counterparts. During Operation Guam, there were 350 war dogs in the area, and when U.S. forces retook the island, 20 dogs were injured and 25 were killed.

In 1991, Arnold Schwarzenegger was on top of the world. In addition to being the Terminator, he was one of, if not the, top-grossing action stars of the 20th century and hung out with the President of the United States. Is there anything he can't do? Obviously a sled. In January 1991, President Bush tried to teach the action star how to ski, but the results were not ideal. Schwarzenegger recalled: I was only used to sliding down on an Austrian sled, and you could use your feet to guide you. So we're completely out of control.

The pair ended up bumping into First Lady Barbara Bush and breaking her leg, which certainly left a lasting impression on the family.

After Germany ended its occupation of Europe, British troops erected signs at the entrances to concentration camps that not only demonstrated the strength of the British military but also explained the devastation the Germans had brought to the area. When British troops arrived at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on April 15, 1945, they were unprepared for what awaited them.

They found 38,000 prisoners, living without food, water or toilets. There were 15,000 prisoners still waiting for the British in an overflow camp, and the liberation of the camp was the first of many moments of triumph for the British Army.

In 1863, when 34 samurai, known as the second Japanese ambassadors to Europe, traveled to France to secure foreign trade, they stayed in Egypt for a while and participated in some tourist activities. Who could blame them for having such a view? In the mid-19th century, all of Japan's ports were closed, meaning Japan was effectively an island.

In order to open up the country, they needed to establish trade relations with Europe, so this group of warriors traveled throughout France and Egypt in the name of making their country a better place. Unfortunately, Samurai technically didn't get the job done, but they got this amazing photo in the deal, so it's not bad.

During her tenure in the White House, First Lady Roosevelt put the Secret Service into trouble with her outspoken personality. Not only did she always carry a concealed weapon, but she also insisted on driving her own car.

Because she and the president were not under the same microscope, Eleanor Roosevelt could speak out as much as she wanted, Times magazine recalled: She spoke fiercely and freely about racism, poverty and sexism in a way that a sitting president at the time could not.

Victorian town houses became more common when Britain saw an influx of money. While not everyone is getting rich, there are more nouveau riche in the country, which means people are building houses. Since space was an issue, the new wealthy built large houses that could accommodate all the rooms of their country estates.

One of the most important rooms is the library. Inside, a Victorian library features bookshelves carved into the walls, or bookshelves so heavy they won't move even long after their owners have passed away. It's obvious that this home has seen better days, but think of all the great literary moments that happened within these walls.

Has anyone both horrified and fascinated audiences quite like Ozzy Osbourne? The bat-biting rocker began his career in 1948 in Birmingham, England. The town was essentially a factory town after World War II, and his father worked nights as a toolmaker while his mother worked during the day, meaning Ozzy had to fend for himself when he was young.

Osbourne's family life was difficult and he dropped out of school at the age of 15, determined to become a rock star. He worked as a failed thief, worked in a factory, and spent time in prison before forming Black Sabbath with Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward. Rock Ozzy.

Before all your information could fit in the palm of your hand, data was a beast to contend with, and it was measured in tons. Herman Hollerith invented punch-card counting for the 1890 census, and the same card program was retired with minor tweaks throughout the mid-20th century. When applications are processed via card, a computer is not required. Instead, the cards are run through a tabulating machine to count the number of key presses.

These data cards must be kept strictly. If anything is changed or lost, it can ruin years of work and cause a huge headache for whoever fixes the bug. Thankfully, we've moved beyond this cumbersome calculation.

For men, cutting hair was just as easy in the 19th century as it is today, although there were more options for the face. Before long beehive beards came back into fashion, chances are no one was walking around with a combed-over head of hair unless they were a member of ZZ Top.

The first barber school opened in Chicago in the late 1800s. That was the first time a more streamlined hair care routine entered the modern world, along with simplifying the task of cutting hair.

Opened in 1794, the Ménagerie is one of the oldest zoos in the world, housing a variety of animals from ostriches to elephants. By 1910, Edwardian frivolity had become mainstream and affected the Western world. Why watch an ostrich when you can ride one? It's fascinating to think about how long this ostrich had to sit still with someone on it to get a good photo.

was either one of Europe's most well-behaved birds, or its focus was drawn elsewhere at the time. Or maybe it's some trick photography. Regardless, this photo is a timeless piece of wonderful .

To cut down a tree this big, loggers need more than just the right tools. They also need courage, gumption and a lot of help. In 1891, loggers spent eight days felling the massive tree. Not only did the redwood tree take a powerful saw and a few men to cut it down, the loggers also had to dig a trench around the tree to make sure it broke evenly after it was felled.

Once cut down, parts of the tree were taken from Big Stump Grove and Kings Canyon National Park to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and the British Museum in London - both pieces still exist today.

They eventually settled in Montana, living in large teepees made of buffalo hides.

While there have been more accomplished and respected painters, no artist since Bob Ross has made people feel comfortable with themselves and their artistic abilities. While hosting The Joy of Drawing on PBS from 1983 to 1994, Ross became a welcome member of many families. Ross grew up in Orlando, Florida, and completed just one year of high school before joining the United States Air Force.

It was while stationed in Alaska that he began studying painting in the early 1960s. In an interesting twist, Ross learned his most common technique—called wet-on-wet—from television painting instructor Bill Alexander while watching PBS. It's always fascinating when life comes full circle.

Clooney was appearing on a show called Sunset Beat at the time, as motorcycle cop Chic Chesbro (seriously) wearing a leather jacket and rocking some serious locks to fight criminals.

But Clooney is more than just a Harley-riding cop on the show, his character also plays lead guitar in a private prayer band when he's not fighting crime. If you're wondering why you've never watched this show, that's because it was canceled after two episodes. Chic Chesbro, we barely know you.

Well, that's one way down the mountain. Camp Wheeler in Georgia was the site of the mobilization of the National Guard after the United States entered World War I in 1917. Wheeler is where the National Guard prepares before being integrated into the Army, making it one of the last stops many see before heading to Europe.

In order to bring the campground up to code, 21,480 acres of land were renovated at a cost of $4 million. After the First World War, the camp became a demobilization center before closing. The camp closed permanently in January 1946.

Car accidents are no joke. This colorful photo makes it appear that no one was injured in the car accident, but it is not difficult to imagine how people in the early 20th century would have felt about such an accident. Car ownership was low back then, and there was no set set of rules for taking classic cars out for a spin.

There are no signs, signals or even a rule book for these Sunday drives, and it's a wonder more people aren't hurt when drivers start speeding around town in their fancy new cars. Hope this driver has insurance.

It's a wonder that Galileo was able to create an accurate depiction of the moon with such little technology at his fingertips. He only had a simple telescope and his own mind to create these gorgeous watercolors. Each section focuses on the different rotations of the Moon during its cycle, which he painted while completing his professorship in Geometry, Mechanics and Astronomy at the University of Padua.

His moon painting was created in the fall while observing the celestial body through a telescope. What do you think it would have looked like if he had decided to work in the summer?

Look at the colors, it's as if the trees surrounding this cave were a Van Gogh painting. To find this beautiful foliage, visitors must head east of Tokyo, and while this may sound like a long trek, it's actually a less traveled route. Japan's busiest airport is located in Chiba, which means it's easy to travel through this cave in Japan simply by setting foot on the ground.

If you end up visiting this lush cave, be sure to bring a camera, it has been worn down by generations of water and you never know what colors will bloom around the rocks.

In the 18th century, Victorian London was awash with lights. Filled with fish oil and wicks, and using silver-coated copper reflectors, these reflectors illuminated entire city streets. But the lights don’t light themselves, and to ensure they stay lit, we employ a clean lighting team to maintain these structures.

Every night, lamplighters go out on the streets to make sure the lights are on, and the next morning they go out again to make sure the lights go out. It's a lonely life, but it seems somewhat romantic.

Coogan's Bluff follows Clint Eastwood as Walt Coogan, an Arizona Sheriff tracking a killer through the mean streets of New York City. Eastwood made $1 million for his role in the film, which was filmed in 1968 - a price that took up most of the production budget.

Most of the film's final scenes take place in Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park, an area with stunning views of the Hudson River. It was most likely in Tyrone, where Eastwood met his squirrel friend and relaxed in long takes. Eastwood and director Don Siegel continued to collaborate on and off over the next decade, and it's unclear whether Eastwood remained in contact with the squirrel.

The Photochrom process is used to colorize images from black and white negatives by direct transfer to lithographic printing plates. The Photochrom process was developed in the 1880s thanks to printing company employee Hans Jakob Schmidt. This photo is just one in a collection showing what life was like in the Netherlands at the turn of the century.

In a fantastic optical illusion, Sørvágsvatn, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, appears hundreds of feet above sea level. Looking at the lake, it's as if a large body of water sits high above the ocean, waiting for an earthquake or heavy rain to dump to a lower depth, causing its interior to spill over to the shore and fall into what must be hundreds of feet into the ocean.

This is not the case, in fact the lake is only 98 feet above the sea. It's the dramatic elevation changes in the surrounding hills that make the lake appear to be high above the sea.

Every temple in ancient Egypt is a gorgeous and beautiful past. While many temples and pyramids were damaged or desecrated in some way, the Temple of Hathor did not suffer such a fate. One of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, it's like a warp from a time when people worshiped gods and destroyed their bodies to build monuments to their rulers.

The temple, with countless rooms and intricate corridors, was built in honor of Hathor, an Egyptian goddess who ruled the sky while guarding lovers, mothers, and newborns. Each room is beautifully crafted, but the stairs are steep and some of them require you to kneel down to get around the temple.

In 1920, Alfred Hitchcock was far from the horror master he is now considered to be. At that time, he was only working as a title card designer at the Islington Studios in Poole Street, Hoxton. When creating title cards for silent films, Hitchcock was free to deal with any part of the film industry that interested him.

He was working on silent films at the time. While keeping his original job, he could try screenwriting, art direction and production management. It would be another seven years before Hitchcock directed his first feature film, The Tenant: The Story of the London Fog .

Jimi Hendrix is so cool that he can have this Santa Claus get up and work for him, and honestly, compared to plain old Saint Nick, wouldn't you rather have the God of Rock and Roll coming down your chimney for milk and cookies? This ad for "Axis: Bold As Love" appeared in the Record Mirror on December 23, 1967, and it's strange that more artists didn't do it. Wouldn't it be great to see Mick Fleetwood in a Santa Claus costume or Jimi Page dressed up like the Easter Bunny? Obviously those shots were never going to happen, there were too many serious people in rock and roll, but Jimi never took himself too seriously.
