Nikon Z9 has been a huge success for Nikon , but I think the most important thing about the long-term success of the Z9 is not its sales. Instead, here’s what it makes: Nikon is fully committed to mirrorless, they have the ability to lead rather than copy, and, most importantly, they are trying to listen to customer feedback.
Customer feedback is key. While the Z9's title features are impressive, smaller details suggest Nikon has been on his guard. For example, the Z9 finally has a simple live view display mode, accessible via the DISP button. The focus frame in AF-C mode can now turn green when the subject is focused. Nikon's two-key formatting and two-key factory reset are back. Now there is a dedicated sensor dust curtain. etc. These may be trivial matters, but they prove that Nikon is attentive.
Nikon has also been actively updating the firmware of Z9. We've seen some major autofocus improvements, 8K 60 FPS RAW video, time backtracking buffer ("pre-release burst"), and improved anti-flashing options added to the camera over time.
You can say these impressive firmware additions should be part of the Z9 from day one – they show Nikon hastily brought the Z9 to market. Maybe it's true, but at the end of the day, it's important that the camera performs well. Even in firmware version 1.0, the Z9 is already ahead of nearly every other camera on the market, and now it is getting better and better. It's nice to know that when I buy a camera from Nikon or anyone else it improves over time instead of staying the same.

- rear LCD significantly improved, including dual-axis tilt, clean DISP mode and glove-sensing touch screen
- Regression of two-key reset option
- Fast, highly accurate AF-S autofocus with excellent low-light focus
- Birds (as well as people, pets and vehicles) subject recognition autofocus
- Perhaps the best AF-C autofocus Nikon has ever seen, especially when subject recognition participates
- Wide Area C1 and C2 customizable autofocus frame size
- Real 3D tracking autofocus achieves
- Excellent high FPS functionality, no power outage and no slideshow shot
- huge buffer for over 1000 RAW photos at 20 FPS
- High Efficiency Star RAW mode with the same image quality as lossless compression RAW, with only 2/3
- 1/32,000 Maximum shutter speed and 900 Second-long exposure
- "Pre-Release Burst" mode is very useful for capturing unexpected actions, although it is just JPEG
- full electronic shutter, no obvious defects
- practical dust curtain
- excellent high ISO performance
- comparable to Z7 and Z7 II
- video options are incredible, with peaks of 8K internal RAW 60 FPS Video
- The best astronomical photography features to date with glowing buttons, starlight views and dim red light mode
- impressive features with firmware update
- Extra long battery life, easy to handle the day of shooting
- 5500 at a competitive release price (in comparison, Sony A1 is $6500, Canon EOS R3 is $6000, Nikon D6 is $6500 USD)
Disadvantages:
- Automatic ISO minimum shutter speed implementation is broken at 30 FPS and 120 FPS
- pre-release burst shot is only 30/60/120 FPS JPEG, in RAW It is impossible in
- cannot lock the menu library, and it is still somewhat imperfect in the implementation
- vertical shot menu does not rotate
- no in-machine RAW multiple exposures, as seen on some Nikon SLR cameras
- Starlight View AF has some minor usability problems (cannot see the exposure compensation changes; lag in low light)
- For unusual subjects, autofocus subject recognition may fail, resulting in AF-C and tracking performance weakened
- Wearing gloves to enter the memory carton is embarrassing and difficult
- No dedicated metering mode button
- No exposure delay mode, which means landscape photographers are limited to 2 seconds and 5 seconds of selfies, rather than exposure delay mode useful 0.2/0.5/1/2/3 seconds option
- cannot enable low light on most external flash heads AF Auxiliary beam
- Camera operation occasionally slows down and needs to be closed/on to reset
- especially when replacing memory cards, the startup time can be very long, depending on the card
- still lacks some of the features on other cameras (sensor shift high resolution mode, shutter trigger based on low vibration detection, and through the touch screen when viewed through the viewfinder AF control etc.)
- Large and heavy cameras are not suitable for light travel photography needs
- is higher than the price range for most amateurs, even if it's the same price as you get
In this review, I've covered some other small pros and cons, as well as a lot of usability suggestions.But those are the biggest ones that I have stood out from the 10,000-foot overview. There is no perfect camera like this, but with every firmware update, the Nikon Z9 is closer to this mark. I think this is one of the two or three best cameras on the entire market today, and depending on your personal requirements it is probably the best . Nikon really wins here. The
Nikon Z9 is priced at $5500, which is helpful. Yes, it’s expensive – frankly, considering how good the under $3,000 segments are today (and under $2,000 and under $1,000 segments…) is, that’s more than most enthusiasts should spend on cameras.
But $5500 is also Nikon's cheapest flagship camera ever, and has been adjusted for inflation. The Z9 is even $1,000 cheaper than the rival Sony A1 and $500 cheaper than the Canon EOS R3. This is amazing considering that the Z9's huge feature set is comparable to the Sony , and even arguably surpasses Canon. Nikon successfully dealt with it all amid the supply chain crisis and rising costs in almost everywhere in the global market.

But does this mean you should buy a Nikon Z9? As always, it depends on your situation. The Nikon Z9 is good for almost everything you can put in; that's not a problem. Instead, the question is whether there are cheaper alternatives that meet your needs, even if it's not as complete as an all-around camera.
For landscape photographers, the Nikon Z7 II may be another option, which matches the Z9’s image quality and is portable enough for long hikes. For wildlife photographers, this could be a used Nikon D500 or even a D850, both of which have Nikon's excellent 153-point autofocus system. For portrait photographers, the Nikon Z5 (and maybe even one of the DX cameras) is OK, as long as you pair it with the right lens, as Nikon’s facial tracking autofocus is excellent on all of their Z cameras.

Even so, at the end of the day, the Nikon Z9 still has no complete replacement. The camera features a very smooth capture of everything from slow-paced landscapes to nearly instantaneous mistakes in flight. You have to decide if this is worth the price and weight of the Z9.
Nikon Z9 is definitely not a camera for everyone, even if almost everyone seems to think it is the camera for them. But I believe it is the best overall camera ever Nikon has ever had, and more than that, I would even say it's a clear step up from the previous title contenders. Looking at the Nikon Z9, I was very encouraged by Nikon’s future and what they’ll prepare for the Z system next.
