Webmaster's Home (ChinaZ.com) September 19th news: iPhone14, iPhone14Plus, Pro and iPhone14Pro Max are equipped with a new emergency help function connected via satellite, so that users can get help even outside of mobile phone and Wi-Fi coverage. This feature was first launched in the United States and Canada starting in November.

ReutersA report this weekend pointed out that the satellite function is implemented by the Qualcomm X65 modem in the phone. A statement from Apple Apple also said that custom RF components and software designed by Apple also made satellite functions possible.

Qualcomm X65 modem enables the connection between 5G cellular phones and data, and also implements the "n53 band", allowing the iPhone to communicate with satellites in the sky. Specifically, Apple has established a partnership with the satellite infrastructure managed by Globalstar.

When the user initiates an emergency help call but fails to connect to the mobile phone tower, an emergency help can be conducted through the satellite. In this case, the phone will provide the option to connect to the satellite and send a short text message. Users need to have a clear sky view to use the feature; iOS will guide users to link their devices to satellites above their heads.

If the local emergency services can use text-based channels, the iPhone will directly send these information through the satellite link. If not, the Apple Relay Center will receive SOS information and call emergency services on your behalf. The service will be available for free from November. Apple did not disclose pricing plans for satellite services after the free period ended.

Apple's chip team is currently developing its own 5G modem, with the goal of removing the components of Qualcomm from the iPhone. The main goal is to improve power efficiency (extend battery life) and reduce patent fees to increase the unit cost profit per iPhone.
