Meta announced on Wednesday that Facebook Pay will be officially renamed Meta Pay for users around the world. Meta started rebranding efforts in the United States in June and is now making the change globally. Starting today, users will see this branding rebrand in Meta products in nearly 200 countries. The company pointed out that the rename to Meta Pay is just a change in the brand name, and the current product features and overall user experience will remain unchanged.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously pointed out that although the service will remain the same, the name change means Meta has taken the first step towards creating a digital wallet for the metaverse. He noted that his vision of the metacosmic digital wallet will allow users to safely manage their identities, what they have and how they pay.

Zuckerberg wrote in a June Facebook 3 article: "There will be all kinds of digital items you may want to create or buy -- digital clothing, artwork, videos, music, experiences, virtual events, and more. Proof of ownership will be important, especially if you want to bring some of them in different services. Ideally, you should be able to log in to any meta-universe experience, and everything you buy should be there."

Meta has been in the payment business since 2009 and says people use its platform to make payments in 160 countries and 55 currencies -- including individual-to-person, business-to-business and business-to-consumer payments.

Facebook changed its corporate brand to Meta in October, thus embodying the company's core ambition to build the meta universe.
