Sacramento Kings big man Domantas Sabonis suffered an apparent rupture of ligaments in his right thumb, putting his availability for Wednesday's game against the Denver Nuggets in question.
Even though Sabonis' injury is a concern, it's still a positive development for the Kings because it's not an issue that automatically shuts down Sabonis. The fact that he would even attempt to compete suggests that his health issues are not as serious as initially feared.
For those who don't know, Sabonis suffered the injury on Christmas Eve against the Washington Wizards. While guarding Bradley Beal and touching his back, the Kings center suddenly wiggled his hand in pain before trying to nurse it.
The Kings noted that he suffered an injury to his right hand, although the team did not release any firm information until it conducts more testing on the issue.
It's hard to tell what's going on.
It now appears that Sabonis's ruptured ligament will not be a long-term problem, and even if he decides to miss the game, he will not miss a few games. Of course, it could impact his production on offense and defense if he chooses to play, but his presence is still a huge boost for Sacramento to really excel in 2022-23.
Sabonis averaged 17.9 points, 12.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game this season. He is an important reason why the Kings can achieve 17 wins and 14 losses and remain in the top 6 in the Western Conference through 31 games.
