Xinhua News Agency, Guangzhou, September 8 (Reporter Liu Hongyu) On the eve of Teacher's Day, teachers and students of South China Agricultural University came to the sculptures of Ding Ying and Lu Yonggen to present flowers to deeply remember the two old people. academician.
In terms of rice research in my country, the "one lineage of teachers and three academicians" of South China Agricultural University has become a good story. In 1955, Ding Ying was elected as a member of the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; in 1993, Ding Ying's secretary and scientific research assistant Lu Yonggen was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; in 2017, Lu Yonggen's student Liu Yaoguang was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In recent years, South China Agricultural University has taken the three academicians as an example to cultivate a large number of new talents for knowing agriculture and loving agriculture.
devoted himself to researching rice
1938, the Japanese army was about to invade Guangzhou, and the faculty and staff of Sun Yat-sen University began to retreat from Guangzhou to the rear. At this time, Ding Ying risked his life and did not forget to put away more than 500 varieties of sweet potato seedlings, packed more than 400 rice varieties, and retreated on the last ship.
Ding Ying is known as the "father of Chinese rice cultivation science" and has cultivated the world's first "thousand-grained" rice type. He is the first dean of South China Agricultural University. He loves students, sets an example, and is good at temptation. He never puts airs on his airs and bows actively when he sees students.
Lu Yonggen is Ding Ying's student. After Ding Ying's death, Lu Yonggen followed his mentor's footsteps and tried hard to follow his example.
He has assisted Ding Ying in conducting research on light temperature ecology of rice varieties in China. After Ding Ying's death, Lu Yonggen presided over the summary of the work and participated in the writing of "Light Temperature Ecology of Chinese Rice Varieties", and won the 1978 National Science Conference Award; in rice genetic resources , rice semi-dwarf, male sterile sex Important progress has been made in genetic research on hybrid infertility and affinity.
Lu Yonggen led the students to carefully protect more than 7,000 rice seed resources collected by Ding Ying, and named it "Ding's Rice Seed Resources" to commemorate Academician Ding Ying. Today, South China Agricultural University has become a treasure house of rice seed resources in my country.

In 2017, Lu Yonggen and his wife donated more than 8.8 million yuan in their life savings to set up an education fund to support agricultural education. In 2019, Lu Yonggen passed away due to illness. According to his will, he donated his body to the medical research and education cause as his final contribution.
Spiritual inheritance
"Indifferent to fame and fortune, devote yourself to studying rice." Professor Liu Xiangdong, a student of Lu Yonggen, said that Lu Yonggen practiced the "Ding Ying Spirit" with practical actions. "He gave many opportunities to young people and was willing to be a ladder."
Liu Yaoguang graduated from South China Agricultural University in 1981 and he taught by Lu Yonggen. After graduating from Japan in 1991, he worked in the local area for several years and lived a prosperous life. Lu Yonggen wrote letters to Liu Yaoguang one after another. Inspired by Lu Yonggen, Liu Yaoguang returned to South China Agricultural University in 1996 and devoted himself to scientific research.

At that time, there was a big gap in domestic scientific research conditions compared with foreign countries. Liu Yaoguang was deeply infected by Lu Yonggen and was not particular about life. He always wanted to spend less money and do more in scientific research, and sometimes even made some small instruments by himself. However, he was very generous to his colleagues and had supported other teachers in scientific research funds.
Vice President of South China Agricultural University Deng Yiqun said that Liu Yaoguang is a person who "does not hesitate to teach" young people. Within the scope of his ability, he always tries his best to help, making people feel deeply warm.
Liu Yaoguang often said: "Science cannot blindly pursue hot topics, we must have a firm research direction and ask the bottom line." For more than 20 years, he has been engaged in the research on molecular genetic and genetic engineering for plant fertility development for a long time, in many cases, Innovative research results have been achieved in the field. Currently, he is creating a gene editing technology to improve hybrid infertility. He said that if the characteristics of hybrid sterility can be overcome, the rice fruiting rate can be greatly improved.
"Respect science, seek truth from facts, and do scientific research steadily." Liu Yaoguang said that Ding Ying and Lu Yonggen played a good guiding role in academic style, and this spirit has always inspired him.
President of South China Agricultural University Liu Yahong said that Huanong should be in mind “the biggest thing in the country”, embed the word “agricultural” into the curriculum and ideological and political affairs, and strive to cultivate knowledge, love agriculture, and love agriculture that conforms to the characteristics of my country’s “three rural issues” and has an international perspective. New types of talents.
Being a "sincere worker"
Patriotism, love agriculture, and indifference to fame and fortune are the common characteristics of the three academicians.
Ding Ying is down-to-earth and does not care about empty talk. He once wrote that he should use the method of " ant crawling" and the determination to "work hard until 150 years old", "with a calm mind, a warm mood, and a firm will, Get rid of everything and go to the countryside.”
Lu Yonggen encourages students to study abroad, and often shows up and tells students how to practice "science has no borders, scientists have their motherland." Until he was in his 70s, he still took his students to various places to look for wild rice. These wild rice often grow in rarely visited places, but he was not afraid of difficulties and climbed mountains and hills with crutches.
A set of white-washed Zhongshan suit , a pair of wrinkled black leather shoes, a leather briefcase that has been used for decades, a magnifying glass, a domestic pen, and a pocket watch whose surface glass has been worn to the point of mottled mottled , this is Ding Ying's usual outfit.
The teachers and students of Huanong respectfully called Lu Yonggen the "Academician of Common Man". The decorations in his home were still in the 1980s: shabby wooden sofas and old-fashioned TVs; iron racks and beds were rusty, bamboo poles for hanging tents, ropes tied to one end and nails fixed to the wall.
Nowadays, Liu Yaoguang's private car has been driving for more than 15 years. Despite this, he has never changed the idea of changing to and from work, and most of the time he still insists on walking or riding a bicycle to and from get off work.
"A sincere scientific worker is a sincere worker." This is Ding Ying's motto.
