The man coughs up sputum for half a year,

Combined immunization and chemotherapy have won the opportunity for surgery in advanced local lung cancer. Professor Liao Yongde's team is performing surgery on the patient.

Yangtze River Daily, Wuhan client, September 19 news (Reporter Luo Lan, correspondent Xie Xuan) "Discovery is at an advanced stage and loses the opportunity for surgical resection." This is a "curse" that many lung cancer patients cannot escape. Recently, Professor Liao Yongde's team from the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, applied immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy to regain the chance of surgery for a patient with advanced lung cancer and successfully operated on it. At present, the 49-year-old patient has recovered and discharged from the hospital, and goes to work normally.

cough of unknown cause, one investigation turned out to be advanced lung cancer

On April 12 this year, Mr. Sun found out "there is a mass in the lower lobe of the left lung, suspected to be lung cancer" at the local hospital. At this time, the cause was unknown to him. I have been coughing continuously and bloodshot in my sputum for half a year. "Cough during the day and at night, sometimes coughing out of breath." Mr. Sun recalled the situation at that time.

On April 25, Mr. Sun came to the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Union Medical College Hospital. Professor Liao Yongde was admitted to the hospital for system evaluation. He was diagnosed with locally advanced lung cancer and supraclavicular lymph node metastasis. He has lost the opportunity of radical resection.

"Patients with advanced lung cancer who have metastasized like Mr. Sun are prone to residual cancer cells in their bodies that cannot be detected by imaging examinations, and they are likely to recur after surgical treatment." Professor Liao Yongde said, for patients with locally advanced lung cancer who cannot be operated on , The side effects of traditional chemotherapy regimens are more obvious, and the treatment effect is not ideal.

After 63 days of immunotherapy, he won the opportunity of surgical resection

Mr. Sun himself rejected chemotherapy, and he still looked forward to surgical resection.

Professor Liao Yongde's team combined with the detection of immunological markers, it is more likely to analyze that patients are sensitive to immunotherapy.

In early May, Mr. Sun started immunotherapy. After one course of treatment, his chest pain and cough symptoms improved significantly. After 3 cycles of immunization combined with chemotherapy, the tumor of 8CM in the left lower lung shrank into a cavity of 3CM. PET-CT examination assessed that the patient’s primary lung and cervical lymph nodes had lost metabolic activity and were indicated for surgery.

On July 28th, Professor Liao Yongde's team minimally invasively removed the patient's left lower lung lobe through thoracoscopy, and performed systematic lymph node dissection during the operation. The pathological results showed no residual tumor cells in the primary tumor and regional lymph nodes. Mr. Sun was discharged from the hospital one week after the operation and recovered well.

Mr. Sun will receive a one-year immunotherapy, that is, an "immunization shot" every 21 days. This once-expensive domestic drug is currently included in the National Medical Insurance Drug List.

immune combination therapy makes it possible to cure locally advanced lung cancer

immune combination therapy, as an emerging research, is currently a hot field of exploration in the international medical community. Professor Liao Yongde introduced: Immunotherapy is to precisely eliminate cancer cells by activating the body's own immune system. The side effects are small and the curative effect is relatively long-lasting. It is possible to achieve long-term survival.

In recent years, Professor Liao Yongde’s team has devoted themselves to research on immunotherapy, and has won surgery opportunities for dozens of locally advanced lung cancer patients. Through precise guidance of postoperative treatment, the cure of locally advanced lung cancer has become possible. "But not every patient can be as lucky as Mr. Sun." Professor Liao Yongde said that the heterogeneity of tumors is very strong, and each patient has different sensitivity to immune combined chemotherapy and different treatment effects.

Professor Liao Yongde specially reminded: the simple immunotherapy is only effective for 30% of patients, and the effective rate after combined chemotherapy is about 80%. He said: Immunotherapy also has its risks. During treatment, CT and other images must be reviewed regularly. Once there is no effect, traditional radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be used instead.
