"Hello everyone, I am Professor Barry Marshall ..." Recently, a video speech came from Perth, Australia in the southern hemisphere to Zhengzhou, China in the northern hemisphere. In the video, Marshall, the Nobel Prize winner in Medicine and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, smiled and said that he would cooperate to build the "Marshall International Gastroenterology Medical Research Center" and the "Marshall International Gastroenterology Hospital" in Zhengzhou in the future.
What achievements did Marshall have? What will the heavy-duty signing of Marshall bring to Henan? On September 30, Elephant News reporter interviewed Chen Ningheng, PhD, who had listened to Marshall's academic lectures, who had , the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University.
encountered group ridicule
"Before the 1980s, the medical community had a 'stereopathy' of gastritis and peptic ulcer , which is that stomach disease is caused by psychological stress, food stimulation, and excessive gastric acid . Of course, this cognition is wrong, but Professor Marshall almost gave his life to reverse this cognition."
Chen Ningheng introduced that in 1979, Marshall, who had obtained an undergraduate degree in medicine, discovered a strange bacteria - Helicobacter pylori in a gastric mucosal specimen.
Two years later, he came to Royal Perth Hospital in Australia to work as a graduate student in internal medicine, where he met Robin Warren, a doctor who was studying gastric ulcers . Both of them were skeptical of the mainstream view of the cause of gastric ulcer at that time, and hit it off and began a cooperative research.
Although the two studies found that Helicobacter pylori is likely to be the culprit of gastric ulcers, the medical community at that time generally believed that no bacteria could survive in the acidic environment of the stomach, so gastric ulcers had nothing to do with bacterial infection. People prefer to believe that their specimens have been contaminated or even faked.
Facing prejudice, Marshall and Warren were not discouraged. They cheered each other and continued to study. After investigating 100 patients with gastric cancer, they found that Helicobacter pylori exists in the gastric mucosa of all duodenal ulcers, 90% of patients with gastric ulcers, and about half of gastric cancer patients.
Subsequently, in April 1982, Marshall finally successfully cultured and isolated the bacteria from gastric mucosa biopsy samples. In a paper published in the authoritative medical journal The Lancet, the two proposed that gastric ulcers and gastric cancer are caused by Helicobacter pylori and should be treated with antibiotics.
However, this paper was ridiculed by the industry, and many people called them liars who violated common sense. In addition, what made Marshall even more desperate was that their animal tests also failed: no matter how much Helicobacter pylori they injected the test animals, they did not have gastric ulcers.
Test the bacteria as a body
"Professor Marshall likes a Chinese idiom - Test the firewood and taste gall . He once used this word in his academic lectures to inspire medical personnel to believe in themselves and be brave in exploring on the road of scientific research. And he himself is the best footnote to this idiom."
Chen Ningheng said that after the animal experiment failed, Marshall decided to "test bacteria as a body ."
According to Pengpai News , Marshall once talked about the process of his and his partners' initial discovery of Helicobacter pylori in his speech at Tongji University.
11984 On June 12, 2019, after checking and confirming that he did not carry Helicobacter pylori and had stomach problems, Marshall secretly drank the Helicobacter pylori culture medium and conducted an experiment on himself. Then live normally as usual, quietly waiting for these bacteria to reproduce in the body.
Sure enough, a few days later, Marshall developed symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, difficulty in eating, and after gastroscopy, he was "surprised" to find that his stomach was covered with Helicobacter pylori.
Marshall's wife was frightened after knowing that he had done something stupid and advised him to treat him quickly, but Marshall was unwilling to miss this opportunity to study and conduct more observations and experiments on his body. It was not until 10 days later that Marshall took antibiotics to start treatment, considering the potential risk of gastric cancer.
"Considering the medical conditions at that time, Marshall's behavior was undoubtedly searching for life," Chen Ningheng said: "When something goes wrong in any link, it may endanger life. Fortunately, antibiotic therapy works."
After hearing about Marshall's "crazy" deeds, people finally began to pay attention to and agree with the hypothesis of Marshall and Warren, and more and more people are involved in the research on Helicobacter pylori. Ten years later, at the National Institutes of Health summit, Helicobacter pylori was finally confirmed as the culprit of peptic ulcer disease. Since then, gastric ulcer disease has changed from a chronic disease that was originally difficult to cure to a disease that can be cured more easily.
Another decade passed, and Marshall and Warren, a pair of partners who once fought against the world, eventually won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Chen Ningheng said: "Their discovery inspired the medical community to study the relationship between microorganisms and other chronic inflammatory diseases, and is of milestone significance in the field of digestive diseases."
heavy-weight foreign aid
According to the survey statistics of the Nobel Foundation , Professor Marshall ranks second among the top ten most popular Nobel Prize winners. "And this second-favorite Nobel winner still has a deep relationship with Henan." Chen Ningheng recalled that on August 24, 2015, on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Professor Marshall was invited to Zhengzhou for a visit and exchange and held an academic lecture.
In the special report, Professor Marshall reviewed the process of his discovery of Helicobacter pylori with Professor Robin Warren. He used the famous saying of historian Daniel Bostein, "The biggest enemy that hinders people from acquiring knowledge is not ignorance of the unknown world, but a wrong understanding of things." He expressed the arduous journey of their discovery. Subsequently, Professor Marshall was hired as " visiting professor at Zhengzhou University ". In 2011, Marshall was named a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
According to " Henan Daily ", on September 22 this year, Zhengzhou University and Marshall signed a full-time introduction agreement, and will cooperate to build the "Marshall International Gastroenterology Medical Research Center" and the "Marshall International Gastroenterology Hospital" in Zhengzhou in the future. Two days later, at the 5th China Henan Talent Recruitment Innovation and Development Conference, Professor Marshall, who could not visit the scene in person, said seriously in the video: "Henan's attention and investment in science and technology have always impressed me!"
"I am deeply excited and proud that my hometown can introduce such a level of 'foreign aid'," Chen Ningheng said excitedly: "I believe that under his leadership, any digestive difficult and complicated diseases is only a matter of time - after all, in the face of challenges, we have learned to lie on firewood and taste gall!"
