Hong Kong movie version of "The Well Side Meeting"

Last Thursday, the "Chaozhou Opera Big Stage" was broadcast on the "Old Records" column of a little-known version of the Chaozhou drama "The Well Side Meeting" ——Hong Kong Chaozhou opera movie "Li Sanniang: Well Side Meeting", performed by Hong Kong Dongshan Chaoyin Opera Art Club in 1961, produced by Wansheng Film Production Company, Ding Chuqiao played Li Sanniang, and Zhuang Xuejuan played Liu Chengyou (Liu Navel). The old Wang and Jiucheng whom everyone is accustomed to, are Xiao Wang and Jiucheng in the movie, played by Li Hangen and Xie Qingsong respectively. Compared with the stage version, although the scenes of the movie version "The Meeting at the Well" are constructed in the studio, they are more realistic than the stage scenes. The well that Li Sanniang draws water, the falling snow, and the clouds in the distant wilderness... It feels like being there. The use of film methods, especially close-up shots, makes the characters' facial expressions, eyes and body language more delicate and expressive.

Ding Chuqiao and Zhuang Xuejuan are a pair of golden partners on the stage and screen. The films shot by Ding Chuqiao mainly cooperate with Zhuang Xuejuan, which are like fish and water. Ding Chuqiao belongs to Daqingyi, and his singing voice is pure, gentle and simple, without losing the charm, and even retains the round tone of the child actor. The movie version of "The Well Side Meeting" lasts about 30 minutes, which is about 30 minutes less than the Guangdong Chaozhou Theater and Shantou Opera School versions broadcast on the "Teochew Opera Big Stage" 20 minutes, why is this? In fact, many repertoires in the Hong Kong version mostly use ancient editions, even if they are organized, they have not changed significantly. At present, we can see that many versions that we can hear have been edited and expanded to make the length larger, mainly extending the independent singing of Li Sanniang. In the chant, the gags of Lao Wang and Jiucheng are added at the same time, so that the character image of Li Sanniang is fuller. The supporting roles of Lao Wang and Jiucheng are just right embellishments, making the stage more solemn, humorous, and more vivid. It is not uncommon for
to have multiple versions of a play in Chaozhou operas, but there are so many versions of "The Well Side Meeting" that other repertoires are incomparable. Different scripts, different composition (modes), different performance groups, and different protagonists create multiple characteristic styles of the same play. The ancient Hong Kong movie version of "The Well Side Meeting" also provides a comparison with many stage versions of the same name. In comparison, we can understand the evolution of the outstanding traditional repertoire of Chaozhou opera from original, ancient, and old, after finishing, retouching, and upgrading to maturity, fullness, and freeze. This should be the biggest gain from listening to old records and the value of old records.
