Two years after the release of "Night and Day", Ryusuke Hamaguchi returned to the film stage again and won the 71st Berlin Film Festival with his new work "Occasion and Imagination" Jury Prize. The surprise that this new work presents to the audience is that it is composed of three independent love stories, and there is no obvious connection between the same family, the same city, or other obvious connections.
The three short films "Magic", "The Door Is Open" and "Once Again" respectively tell the story of an unexpected love triangle, an attempted temptation and a misunderstanding encounter. Although fragmented, "Accident and Imagination" still maintains an organic narrative process and even emphasizes this point. Although most of the action takes place in one space and only two actors are involved, it does not make people feel like an indoor drama. This is not only because of the dialogue, but also because of its complex concept of time and space, the last episode almost turned into a science fiction film.
When you look at the whole film, you will find that the director Ryusuke Hamaguchi doesn't like to set up suspense, and he doesn't try to show anything to convince the audience. He just invites the audience into his world through a bridge of experience. It’s no wonder that some movie fans commented that Hamaguchi is a miracle in this age of dying creativity.Because his body seems to reflect the names of many predecessors, and it seems to be just the movie itself.
