This class ship was developed from the Soviet Union's Kola-class frigate . After serving, it has been the largest displacement among the North Korean naval surface ships. The ship began to be built in 1971. The first ship is reported to be officially put into service in 1973. There are reports that the class ships subsequently built 2-4 ships one after another, but this news is not accurate. But it is certain that there are currently two frigates of this model in , namely No. 531 and No. 591.
