Cyprus officials admitted on Thursday, October 20 that they have few ideas on how to stop the influx of informal immigrants, and the number of informal immigrants this year has doubled compared with 2021.

In the House Interior Committee, lawmakers discussed the issue of barbed wire spanning 11 km of buffer zones—the main entry point for informal immigration.

Permanent Secretary of the Interior Costas Constantinou said that while razor fences reduce border crossings in relevant areas, traffickers are simply moving to other entry points.

The official emphasized that the installation of barbed wire has produced some results, but relying on barbed wire alone is not enough to deal with the overall situation.

"We have no choice," Constantino said, calling on anyone to make suggestions.

The official talked about the economic benefits behind the trafficking of immigrants and cited examples of Turkish Airlines and Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus Airlines. He said the companies collectively transport unaccompanied minors, and it is clear that air tickets are being subsidized.

Constantino said the flow of informal immigration has increased exponentially. So far this year, about 17,000 people have entered the Republic-controlled territory, almost twice the number recorded in 2021. Meanwhile, the number of unaccompanied minors has tripled.

Asydware seekers' Pournara reception center is getting more and more stressed, and authorities are trying to reduce processing time to make room for newcomers.

Currently, about 70,000 asylum seekers have crossed the border into the Republic and reside in cities and villages.

Petros Zeniou of the Police Civil Registration and Immigration Department stressed the importance of locate and identifying informal immigration.

A major obstacle is associated with the relative impunity of traffickers, and even if they are arrested and convicted, they are usually sentenced to a light sentence of two to three months. At the same time, human traffickers made a lot of money.

The high welfare in Cyprus is the main cause of the doubling of informal immigration. Damianou criticized the government for its slow response and minimal results in solving illegal immigration.
