On October 12, a court in Connecticut, USA read out the verdict: Extreme conspiracy theorist Alex Jones (48 years old), was established for defamation and needs to pay nearly $1 billion in compensation.
Jones, a staunch advocate of the extreme conservatism , from Texas, repeatedly claimed that the most terrifying school shooting in American history was "a scam written and acted by those who opposed gun use, but in fact, no one died at all."
Comprehensive foreign media reports on October 13, Jones declared that this was simply the "black moment of free speech." However, he showed no sign of shutting up on this, and would continue to promote his conspiracy point of view, and he also intended to appeal.
This story goes back to December 14, 2012. That day, a mass shooting of 26 people died at Sandy Hook Elementary School in , Connecticut. Among the victims, 20 were six or seven years old, and the other six were school employees.
The picture above shows the 20-year-old murderer Adam Lanza. After causing the tragedy, he committed suicide by drinking and committing suicide. In November 2013, a Connecticut court announced that the tragedy was done by Lanza alone.
In November 2014, an American institution issued a report stating that Lanza suffered from mental illness. On the morning when I went to school to create horror, Lanza killed his mother first.
However, today's protagonist is Jones.
This shooting once again highlighted the issue of civilian guns in the United States, and there were constant debates over gun control and gun ownership. As mentioned earlier, Jones is a staunch advocate of gun rights.
Over the years, Jones has repeatedly spread rumors on his website and talk show: The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was simply "no one died", it was just a prank written and acted by those who opposed American gun rights, and Lanza and all the victims were "hired actors" by those people. After the crazy "free speech", the moment of self-resulting has arrived: Jones has to accept at least three trials and bear huge compensation.
Since 2018, more than a dozen families of victims and an FBI agent have filed lawsuits against Jones.
Before the first trial began, Jones was fined $126,000 (about RMB 900,000) by a Texas judge in 2019 for his contempt of court and unable to provide evidence or witnesses.
In August 2022, Jones officially accepted the first trial in Texas. The plaintiff was the parents of a boy victim. Jones' lawyer defended: If you really want to pay for this scam, give the parents one dollar.
Finally, the Texas trial result was: Jones should compensate the parents with nearly $50 million (approximately RMB 360 million).
On October 12, the results of the second trial were released in Connecticut: Jones needs to pay a total of US$965 million (about RMB 6.9 billion) in compensation from the family of 14 victims and the agent.
The result of the second trial made Jones angry. He believes that the judges completely ignore whether he has the ability to pay compensation.
It is reported that Jones and his company's property combined have about US$27 million (approximately RMB 194 million). However, the victim's family's purpose is not just to compensate, they hope that "as long as the trial result can be destroyed, it will be a good result."
Jones' third trial will be held in Texas, and the result should be without suspense.
Jones has begun asking for money from the audience in his live video, calling for donations to him so that he can appeal. He preached: "Those people want to scare us and not let us question the shootings of Youvade and Parkland. We will not leave, we will not terminate (question)."
A small town in Uvalde, Texas, killed 15 people in May 2022. A high school shooting occurred in February 2018 in Parkland, a small town in , Florida, killing 17 people.
Just like this, he was even invited by the media to talk about it. For example, in 2013, a program of BBC asked him to be a guest to discuss the "conspiracy theory".
Since 2012, Jones has repeatedly emphasized that those school shootings in the United States are "very, very suspicious." In 2013, Jones preached in an interview with an American magazine: "Those tragic events are just used to make gun supporters feel guilty."
The man standing on the sturdy car is Jones
How many Americans believe his remarks? A poll showed that one out of five Americans believed his nonsense. In fact, this result is nothing surprising. After all, many Americans are still firm supporters of Trump’s remarks.
Jones's remarks are unscrupulous because someone believes them. And there are many people who believe in it, shouldn’t he be punished a little badly?
According to statistics, from 2000 to 2009, there were 68 shootings in American schools; from 2010 to 2019, there were 231 shootings in American schools; from 2020 to 2022, in less than three years, there were 88 shootings in American schools.
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects citizens' right to possess and carry weapons. Civilian guns are one of the main political topics in the debate between the two parties in the United States. Because of the split viewpoint, there has been no conclusion on whether to revise the relevant laws.
"There are more people with guns, and fewer crimes will be committed" is not a conspiracy theory?
