Paris, July 4 (Lujia) On the 2nd local time, another tragic drowning occurred in the Canal de l’Ourcq in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. The deceased was a minor of about 17 years old.

According to Le Parisien, preliminary evidence and eyewitness testimony showed that passers-by saw the teenager jumping into the Ourcque Canal near the Parc de la Villette at around 20:00 that night. He soon drowned, and witnesses subsequently notified rescuers. The Paris fire department, the river brigade and the emergency rescue service (Samu) quickly intervened and rescued the teenager from the water. He was in cardiopulmonary arrest at the time, and rescuers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him at the scene. He was then immediately taken by helicopter to the Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. The teenager was unconscious and in critical condition when he was sent to the hospital, and was eventually pronounced dead on the morning of the 3rd.

The police have not disclosed the specific identity of the deceased, but he may be from Choisy-le-Roi (Val-de-Marne, 94th province), a suburb of Paris. The Paris prosecutor's office has accepted the case but could not provide further information as of press time. The specific circumstances of his drowning are still unclear, and there are still many questions that need to be investigated as to why he jumped into the canal.

This is not the only recent drowning incident in Paris. A few days ago, a woman jumped into the Seine River from the Pont d’Arcol in the 4th arrondissement of Paris and tried to end her life. She was seen by a gendarme who was jogging and successfully saved her.

According to drowning survey data released by the French Public Health Service, from June 1 to July 5, 2021, more than 300 drowning incidents occurred in France, of which 79 people died.
