Since the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Kiev has repeatedly called on the West. In addition to hoping to obtain direct assistance, Kiev is also quite ambitious about joining the Western family, including joining EU , NATO , etc., which are all the targets it strives for. Recently, Ukrainian President Zelensky signed an application to speed up his joining NATO, but the subsequent reaction from the West was somewhat intriguing.
Kiev started the acceleration process, and NATO poured cold water
It is reported that recently, Ukrainian President Zelensky, Speaker Stefanchuk and Prime Minister Smegal signed an application for Ukraine to join NATO in an expedited manner. Zelensky later delivered a speech at the emergency meeting of the National Security Council of saying that Ukraine has proved compatibility with NATO standards. In addition, he also called for the support of the "coalition of international relations" to increase military and technical assistance to Ukraine.
Calls from Kiev hope that NATO can open a fast application channel to Ukraine, but NATO and the United States' responses seem to mean "abandon Ukraine". After Zelensky's statement, NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg responded that each country has the right to decide its own path, and NATO's "open door" policy has not changed. But he immediately changed his subject and emphasized that the decision to join NATO needs to be made by 30 member states.
It should be pointed out that among the 30 NATO member states, the attitude of Ukraine to join NATO is not easy to get the 30 countries to reach an agreement. Stoltenberg finally told the truth, saying that it was urgent to provide Ukraine with emergency assistance.
Judging from NATO's response, Ukraine still needs to "consider the long-term plan" if it wants to join NATO. In contrast, it is more in line with its strategic goals to continue to provide weapons assistance to Ukraine and continue to stand on the front line of consuming Russia.
The United States made the statement
Similar, the United States also responded similarly at the first time. Assistant to the National Security Affairs of the US President Sullivan directly pointed out in his response, saying that it is "inappropriate" to initiate the process of Ukraine's accession to NATO now. He said the best way to support Ukraine is to "actual support" from the ground. In response, the report on the website of the US Politics pointed out that two U.S. officials familiar with internal discussions said that the Biden administration was surprised by Ukraine's decision.
As the United States sets the tone, Zelensky's desire to apply for accelerating his entry into NATO will also fail. How to deal with the relationship between Ukraine and NATO has long been tricky, and Ukraine's ultimate fate is not optimistic as the Russian-Ukraine conflict breaks out and continues to have an impact on the world pattern.
