Luhansk was one of the important industrial areas in Ukraine during the Soviet period. It has developed coal, steel, machinery and chemical industries. It was one of the earliest regions to complete industrialization in Ukraine, and its industrial output value accounts for 20% of the country.
The population of Donesque Prefecture exceeds 1/10 of the country, and the urbanization rate exceeds 90%, making it the most developed region in Ukraine. Khlsong Oblast is Ukraine's granary and one of the largest grain exporters in Europe.
