Following 2006, 2012 and 2017, the fourth scientific investigation of the Yangtze River whole basin of the Yangtze River borundum was recently launched. This is the first time that the Yangtze River species system has been conducted after the implementation of the Yangtze River's comprehensive fishing ban and the promulgation and implementation of the "HTM1 Yangtze River Protection Law of the People's Republic of China" has been carried out.
This scientific expedition was organized by the Fisheries Supervision and Administration Office of the Yangtze River Basin of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and jointly participated by the fishery authorities of six provinces (cities) in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, relevant scientific research institutes and social organizations. It will fully grasp the distribution of populations of Yangtze River dolphins and the current habitat environment, and will overall evaluate the populations of typhoons, structure and change trends of Yangtze River dolphins, scientifically analyze the risk factors and the effects of protection measures for Yangtze River dolphins, and provide a basis for formulating a more targeted protection plan for Yangtze River dolphins.
The Yangtze River Porpoise is a national first-class protected wild animal. It is a freshwater porpoise endemic to the Yangtze River and is an important indicator species for evaluating the status of the Yangtze River ecosystem. The results of the scientific investigation of the Yangtze River Porpoise in 2017 showed that the number of Yangtze River Porpoises was about 1,012, and the population was critically endangered.
