Medusa, a transparent jellyfish, was photographed at a depth of about 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) in Puerto Rico. In this close-up, there are two sets of tentacles: short tentacles in the inner ring and longer tentacles originating from the base of the bell. They use nematocysts or stingers to capture prey. The light emitted by the mining vessels affects the behavior of the Medusas, who migrate back and forth between deep and shallow water twice a year.
