Seeing several discarded plastic bags floating on the river, Zhou Xiang immediately arranged for Song Weijia, a staff member of the Town River Chief Office, to send the question to the "Dondai Town River Chief System Working Group".

Dongdai Town is located at the mouth of Aojiang , the mother river of Lianjiang County, with a developed water system. In the past, villagers' domestic sewage was discharged directly into the river, causing environmental pollution. In 2017, the town established a river chief system, and a series of treatment measures were immediately rolled out, greatly improving environmental problems.

The reporter noticed that Song Weijia had a stack of river patrol logs in his hand, recording the river patrol by the river supervisor. One page per day, twice a day. The problems discovered during the river patrol and the implementation of rectifications are clear at a glance. Pictures are attached on the back, so that every day's inland river management has "pictures and truth." Up to now, the five river channel managers have conducted a total of 1,502 inspections and clearing pollution and obstructions.

"The river water used to be black and smelly, so I would cover my nose when passing by. Now it doesn't stink anymore, the scenery along the river has become more beautiful, and trails have been built, so we don't have to hide away." Villager Zhuang Cuiyun said.

Establishing the river chief system and implementing inland river regulation is only one aspect of Dongdai Town's efforts to promote the construction of beautiful countryside. In the process of building beautiful villages, the town implemented the development concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" and implemented a one-village-one policy, which has brought about butterfly changes in many villages.

During a break from patrolling the river, Zhou Xiang took reporters into Huli Village, which is across the river from Yangxi Village. I saw that the village roads were clean and spacious, the fields were full of greenery, the farmhouses were well-proportioned, and every household was decorated with lights and colors to celebrate the Lantern Festival. Zhou Xiang told reporters that this village was once classified as a weak and disorganized grassroots party organization because of its filthiness and chaotic management, and was listed as a key rectification by the county. Through the re-election of the two village committees, the village has implemented key projects such as centralized sewage interception and treatment, improvement of the village road, renovation of the facade of bare houses, renovation of dry toilets, and creation of beautiful courtyards, giving the village a completely new look.

Walking further along the river, you will reach Longshan Village. This is the end of the 1.6-kilometer river section that Dongdai Town is currently focusing on management. In the pavilion next to the river, villagers in twos and threes are enjoying their meals. Accompanying them was the warm spring breeze and the gurgling river water.

Inland river management has achieved initial results. Dongdai Town will launch an ecological improvement project next month to steadily improve water quality. "Our goal is that people can swim in the river and let more people remember their homesickness!" Zhou Xiang said.
