The article is about 3,700 words and takes 6 minutes to read.

Fu Sinian (1896-1950) was a famous historian and educator. One of the student leaders of the May 4th Movement and the founder of the Institute of History and Linguistics, Academia Sinica.

Fu Sinian is such a person, he can write his own words to ordinary people. Behind this is a sensational treasure island news.

At first glance, it is indeed sad and sad, worthy of these twelve words.

Girl and Lover

On January 13, 1950, Taipei farmer Chen Kenfu got up early and passed by the No. 13 water gate on the banks of the Tamjiang River when he discovered a piece of floral cloth looming in the grass.

curiously stepped forward to take a look, and found a young girl hanging under the bridge, already dead. He was so frightened that he ran away and immediately reported the incident to the police.

The police later arrived to investigate. A white cotton yarn rope of about one centimeter was tied around the neck of the deceased, and the end was tied to a stone pillar on the river embankment, with his feet nearly half a meter above the ground.

The identity of the girl was also quickly identified. Her name is Chen Suqing. She is only 21 years old and is the eldest daughter of a prominent family in Yingge District.

Beside the river embankment at the crime scene, there were also scattered a small wallet and two notebooks. Each of the two notebooks contained a suicide note.

One is a suicide note "To Chen Sujuan".

Due to the long-term Japanese occupation of Taiwan, the elders are basically educated in Japanese. The last letter written to my sister Chen Sujuan is actually left to my parents. The full text is as follows:

Dad! Mother!

I now have to say goodbye to you forever; but please don't be sad. You have raised me like this, and I cannot be by your side forever to serve you. This is a great unfilial act on my part, so I am going to take this road now, and I feel very sad.

I have nothing to say now, what's the use? If you had listened to Sanyuan at that time and promised me to marry Mr. Zhang, I would not have taken this path now. But now it is useless to say a thousand or ten thousand words. Asking me to marry someone I don’t love, I will not even die. My love is hopeless now. What's the point of living in this world anymore?

My heart aches and I have nothing to say. I just ask you not to be sad and not to harm Mr. Zhang. Mr. Zhang is a very good person and I will love him even when I die. Please don’t harm him. He is not a messy person. He said he was sorry for me. Our love has been very innocent until now. I can be worthy of you. Please don’t harm him!

I also ask you not to hate people from other provinces in the future. Some people from other provinces are bad, and there are many who are better than people from this province. If sister Sujuan also falls in love with people from other provinces like Mr. Zhang in the future, please don’t stop her! Finally, I wish you good health.

Your Unfilial Daughter Su Qing. The full text of the suicide note from newspapers and magazines at that time is on

. The words are crazy and infinite. It can be seen that she fell in love with a man from another province. However, her parents objected and she was about to marry someone else soon. She had no choice but to die to prove her ambition.

Conflicts between Taiwanese from other provinces and locals have been going on for a long time and are still a factor of instability.

Taiwan natives are people from this province;

people from other provinces refer to people who are not from Taiwan Province, mainly referring to the mainlanders and their descendants who came to Taiwan with Chiang Kai-shek after the founding of New China.

After the Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan, they promulgated the "Martial Law Order", ushering in a decades-long period of white terror. People from other provinces not only occupy high administrative positions and control more resources, but also exercise high-pressure rule over local people, triggering a widespread sense of crisis and distrust, aggravating social conflicts, and directly affecting the marriage and love of the younger generation.

From Chen Suqing's letter, we can roughly know that this is a love tragedy caused by this.

Another suicide note, sandwiched in a physical notebook, said "We can't live together in this life, but we hope we will survive together." It was left to Taiwan Radio Editor Zhang Baifan, the person Chen Suqing was close to until his death.

The letter focused on describing that although Zhang Baifan was from another province, was talented and had a noble temperament, and the two of them had been in love since their relationship, he had always treated her with courtesy.

Zhang Baifan's current wife Xu Bingxuan used "shameless physical means" to seize the top position, which I will never forgive.

The paper media reported at the time that a photo of the two people was taken together in the lower right corner.

This letter was full of high praise for people from other provinces, which made the Taiwan authorities feel that they had an opportunity to take advantage of it.

Therefore, when the case was not clear, the royal media, led by the Central Daily News, published comments to criticize Chen Suqing's family for their feudal stubbornness.

Fu Sinian, who was the president of National Taiwan University at the time, wrote an article called "Family Bondage", criticizing parents for not excessively interfering with young people's free love. He also called on the society to initiate supplementary burials. Chen Suqing, who had no relationship with National Taiwan University during her lifetime, was to be buried in full glory on the campus of National Taiwan University, and a monument was built to commemorate her. It was like a Taiwanese version of "Romeo and Juliet".

Under huge pressure from public opinion, Chen Suqing’s father did not attend the funeral.

Zhang Baifan, the hero of the incident, even though he had a wife and her wife was about to give birth, he still wore mourning on the day of the funeral.

As a "widow", he cried bitterly and accepted condolences. He wrote "Eternal Love" on the spot. He was regarded as a gentleman with deep feelings and true love. Everyone who heard it was sad and everyone in the audience shed tears.

Reporters and the Truth

The first person to realize that something was fishy was Taiwan's "Xinsheng Daily" reporter Yao Yonglai .

He noticed that when the police found Zhang Baifan based on the address of the suicide note, he was able to walk directly to the suicide scene without the police leading the way.

Secondly, the words in the suicide note are vivid and fluent, unlike what Chen Suqing, who had only received Japanese education, could write. In the letter to my sister, my sister’s name is Chen Sujuan and is written as “Chen Sujuan” throughout. However, this was later overturned, and the handwriting was confirmed to be that of Chen Suqing.

In addition, the letter lays out various details about Zhang Baifan's stay in his arms and Liu Xiahui's. Yao Yong came to check various hotels in Taiwan and found that Chen and Zhang had stayed somewhere as many as 17 times in the past.

It was probably because they were both men. Yao Yonglai was even more suspicious and continued to investigate.

Together with the criminal police investigating the case found that in the hot weather in Taipei in January, Zhang Baifan always wore a long scarf. When he untied it, he could see that there was a shallow mark on his neck.

In the end, the truth of the case was revealed.

Zhang Baifan, whose real name is Zhang Qingxi, is from Fujian. He had a criminal record for theft and lifestyle problems, so he had to change his name to Taiwan. With unknown academic qualifications, he forged a National Taiwan University student ID card, worked as the supplement editor of the "Fujian and Taiwan Daily", and met Chen Suqing, an accountant.

Seeing that Chen Suqing was Bai Fumei, he became obsessed with pursuing her.

After failing, when Zhang Baifan asked someone to propose marriage, Chen Suqing's father saw through his identity as a liar and banned his daughter from dating him. After

, Zhang Baifan worked as an editor and reviewer at Taiwan Radio Station and met the announcer Xu Bingxuan.

Not long after dating, the two got married. Chen Suqing, on the other hand, has traditional ideas and is completely devoted to Zhang Baifan, and the two are still deeply connected after their marriage.

The next year, Chen Suqing was forced to marry her cousin by her family, so Zhang Baifan wrote these two suicide notes for her, coaxing her to copy them and send them home, so that her family would think that she had committed suicide and they could elope together.

On the day of the incident, Chen Suqing was forced to marry by her parents. She was deeply afraid that her loss of virginity would be exposed, and she was unwilling to waste time and money without a name, so she urgently called Zhang Baifan. The two met and quarreled and broke up.

At 11 o'clock in the evening, Zhang Baifan received another call from Chen Suqing. In order to settle the matter, he tricked Chen Suqing into committing suicide together.

Zhang Baifan tied two ropes to the stone pillar of No. 13 Water Gate.

However, he tied his own knot first, while Chen Suqing's knot was knotted .

The two of them met and put it on their necks and jumped down at the same time. As a result, Zhang Baifan fell into the water and returned to the radio station safely, while Chen Suqing went to hell alone.

The police came to the door the next day, and Zhang Baifan pretended to be shocked and distressed again.

is really so ugly and evil, public opinion is in an uproar.

Zhang Baifan changed from a tragic hero to a dishonest villain, which caused the already dangerous reputation of people from other provinces to plummet. When

was in prison, he even received letters of condemnation from 11 men from other provinces in Taiwan, accusing him of losing their love.

The Taiwanese authorities were openly slapped in the face, and Fu Sinian was even more humiliated. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the inquiry meeting at the end of that year.

Ashes to dust, earth to earth

After Zhang Baifan was detained, he was sentenced to death in the first instance, which was later commuted to 7 years .

In 1954, because Taiwan's prisons were full, Chiang Kai-shek issued an order to release more than 2,000 prisoners and defendants, including Zhang Baifan, on bail.

Zhang Baifan has committed suicide again and plans to publish a novel describing his love history, claiming to be a "love saint of the generation".

Because this case triggered the extremely serious provincial feud in Taiwan, many young men and women were implicated in breaking up their marriages. Local parents even strictly prohibited their daughters from dating men from other provinces. The Chiang authorities believed that he had "no remorse" and feared that he would cause trouble again after he was released from prison. Not only did his parole be temporarily canceled, but the actual sentence was later directly increased to 7 and a half .

During Zhang Baifan's sentence, his wife Xu Bingxuan never left her. While working as a kindergarten teacher, she took care of her parents and raised her young son. She also provided Zhang Baifan with 20 yuan a month.

At 8:30 a.m. on July 31, 1957, Xu Bingxuan wore a pink cheongsam and white leather shoes, hired a red van, and went to the door of the First Training Corps of Banqiao Security Command to welcome Zhang Baifan home. Even the captain was deeply moved after seeing it and advised Zhang Baifan to change his ways and not let down his "good wife".

After being released from prison, Zhang Baifan, whose pseudonym was Zhang Ping, became prosperous in the literary and art publishing industry and had a smooth career.

has edited three encyclopedias published by Zhonghua Book Company , all of which are best-sellers. He has also served as the editor-in-chief of "Wenxing Magazine", the printing plant director and supplement editor of "Taiwan Daily", and has handled publications from Dalin Publishing House.

As a newspaper reporter, he often has to write his own articles to enrich the page. It is said that Zhang Baifan has good writing skills and a very good taste in art. He has presided over the "Chinese Art Gallery" business where famous artists gathered.

is just, " is easy to learn and can write, but has no reputation as a scholar; good at business, and does not have the title of entrepreneur ".

His subsequent love life was still colorful, his marriage was derailed again, and he divorced Xu Bingxuan.

In his later years, he married Pang Jifen, who was 20 years younger. Pang Jifen was also an intellectual woman. She was a teacher at first, and later worked as a proofreader in a newspaper. She was deeply devoted to Zhang Baifan, and finally passed away earlier than Zhang Baifan due to illness.

Zhang Baifan passed away in his 80s, and each of his three sons became famous. But in his later years, Zhang Baifan seemed to have deliberately cut off contact with them, so that he was alone when he died.

At the memorial service, there were only a few relatives and friends. Those present told each other about Zhang Baifan and found that the information they knew was inconsistent.

What is even more surprising is that his eldest son is over 60 years old, which means that Zhang Baifan gave birth to a child when he was around 20 years old. From this, Xu Bingxuan could not have followed him when he was 14 or 15 years old. Therefore, some people recalled that Zhang Baifan once asked someone to tell his fortune. After the fortune telling, he gave a birthday horoscope to a person who was 10 years older, saying that he was his friend.

Now that I think about it, this friend is himself.

In this way, Zhang Baifan claimed to be 23 years old at the time of the incident. He may have lost 10 years in age, and he may have had children before he dated Chen Suqing and Xu Bingxuan. This can also explain why he was in his prime and was only 30 years old when he was released from prison. However, he was already bald and balding, which meant that his actual age was already 40.

As a highly controversial and widely discussed social news, the Chen Suqing case has never diminished in popularity. Adaptations and movies have emerged one after another. The movie "A Girl Died in Love" adapted from it was released in Taiwan on July 28, 1980, and sold out to a packed house.

There are rumors that when Chen Suqing committed suicide, the Chiang Kai-shek authorities had prepared a script. They first mobilized public opinion to criticize Chen Suqing's parents for their feudal stubbornness, and then used social forces to force Zhang Baifan to commit suicide, "becoming a myth of ethnic harmony".

therefore deeply resents reporter Yao Yonglai for disrupting the situation. Sixteen years after the

case, Yao Yonglai and his wife were arrested on the grounds of "joining a rebel organization."

Yao Yonglai was sentenced to 12 years in prison. After being released from prison, he worked as an administrator at Xiangjiang Building. He died of illness in the early 1990s.His wife Shen Yuanzhang was also an outstanding female reporter and was tortured in prison:

"Her whole body was stripped naked, and a thick hemp rope was tied to the opposite corner of the house, and she was straddled on it and walked around. Shen Yuanzhang wailed and asked for help, and even the cook in the kitchen shed tears..."

In the end, he committed suicide in humiliation.

"That was the greatest humiliation and pain for a female reporter in the history of the newspaper industry."

- "The Memoirs of Bo Yang"

This plot was later adapted into "The Wind", Gu Xiaomeng, played by Zhou Xun, was subjected to the forced confession punishment.

Such, cruel and shameless.

Zhou Xun plays Gu Xiaomeng in "The Wind", a brave and believing underground party member who ultimately sacrificed his life to protect the party's secrets.
