During the Republic of China, there were several powerful Hui armed forces in Gansu, Ningxia, and Qinghai in northwest my country. These armed forces dominate the mountains and are kings, and they do all kinds of evil, because most of the leaders have the surname Ma from the Hui ethnic group in Hezhou, Gansu Province, also known as the "Ma Jiajun".

These were originally family armed forces. Because they participated in many warlord wars, they successively relied on the Qing court, Beiyang warlords , Feng Yuxiang, Chiang Kai-shek and others. They developed into a prominent warlord named Ma who ruled the northwest region for a while, and eventually became a powerful warlord armed force that controlled the situation in the northwest.

After 1940, among the warlords named Ma, Ma Hongbin, Ma Hongkui, and Ma Bufang were the most powerful and were known as the "Three Horses of the Northwest." Among them, the "Tu Emperor" Ma Bufang was the most brutal. His family ruled Qinghai, Gansu and other places for 40 years. By the end of the Red Army's Long March in 1936, Ma Bufang had the "Ma Jiajun" with a total strength of 20,000.

In order to block the Red Army's Western Expeditionary Army from entering Qinghai, Ma Bufang frantically shouted, "I would rather die than ten thousand people without losing an inch of land." The Western Expeditionary Army suffered heavy casualties under Ma Bufang's attack. Ma Bufang was a dissolute and shameless person. He once said publicly: "Everyone who gave birth to me was raped." His subordinates' wives, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, etc. could not escape his clutches.

Ma Bufang did all kinds of bad things, but Chiang Kai-shek thought he was of great use value. In August 1936, Ma Bufang acted as chairman of the Qinghai Provincial Government and took office as the commander of the second defense zone of the northwest "bandit suppression". After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, Chiang Kai-shek decided to "beat up" Ma Bufang so that he could work hard to fight the civil war for himself.

An embarrassing thing happened during this period. When Chiang Kai-shek saw Ma Bufang, he said with a smile on his face: "Zixiang (Ma Bufang's word), how about coming in?" Ma Bufang quickly replied: "Thanks to the president's care, it's very good." Then Jiang Jieshi Shi introduced Jiang Jingguo, who was standing next to him, to Ma Bufang, "Let me introduce to you, this is Quanzi Jingguo."

"Quanzi" was originally a humble name for his son from his father, and no one had any derogatory connotations. But when Ma Bufang heard Chiang Kai-shek call her son "dog son", she was confused. How should she introduce her son to him. "The president said that his son is a dog, that is, a son under a dog. So, my son Ma Jiyuan cannot be said to be a 'dog.'"

Thinking of this, Ma Bufang asked Ma Jiyuan to step forward, pointed at his son and said, "This is Ma Jiyuan from Donkey Day." This was a joke circulated among farmers in the northwest at the time. It is said that Chiang Kai-shek was stunned after hearing this, and all the surrounding national army generals were stunned.

Another time, Ma Bufang was invited by Chiang Kai-shek to watch a basketball exhibition game. The game was very intense. After the game, Chiang Kai-shek asked Ma Bufang how the game was. Ma Bufang replied: "I didn't expect life in Chongqing to be so difficult. 10 kids are grabbing a rubber ball to play with." However, Ma Bufang loudly ordered the accompanying adjutant to buy 10 rubber balls immediately and give one to each child. No more grabbing was allowed.
