At 14:00 p.m. on May 7, 2022, the academic seminar of "The Tone Not Determined - Li Lei Art Exhibition" was held online at the Tencent Conference. You Rongxi, the second-level inspector of Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, and the Party Branch Secretary of the Jinling Art Museum of Nanjing Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, Nanjing University Senior Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zhou Xian , Nanjing Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, and Liu Chunjie, the director of Jinling Art Museum, Wang Xiaosong, executive director of Shanghai Baolong Art Museum, and more than a dozen scholars from Nanjing University, Tongji University , Southeast University , Nanjing Art Institute , Tianjin Normal University and other universities attended the seminar. Nearly 400 teachers, students and art lovers across the country watched online. The opening speech of the
seminar and the entire seminar were hosted by Liu Yi, associate professor of the School of Art of Nanjing University, and high-salary.
Journalist of Nanjing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau and Party Branch Secretary of Nanjing Academy of Calligraphy and Painting and Calligraphy and Painting, You Rongxi said that Li Lei’s creations are always interesting, relaxed, chic, grand, and free to control and relax. During his tenure as executive director of of Shanghai Art Museum, Li Lei has made many artists and also made himself successful. Zhou Xian expressed his gratitude to the Jinling Art Museum, Li Lei, the attending teachers and listeners. He believed that Li Lei has been exploring and innovating his own style. This exhibition juxtaposes acrylic series and ink paintings, which is very novel. He also believes that Li Lei’s artistic concepts and aesthetic vision are worth discussing.
Original " Southern Metropolis Daily " art review reporter Chen Xiaoqin believes that Li Lei's paintings bring us back to our spiritual hometown. She feels that Li Lei's abstract art has a deep understanding of life and death, and is also permeated with the classical Chinese landscape and feelings.
Associate Professor of the Department of Fine Arts of Nanjing University of Art Ding Yalei believes that the works of Li Lei displayed in this exhibition have rich details, such as the seals and stamps of the works. He highly praised Li Lei's "poetry porcelain" and believed that Li Lei's "poetry porcelain" showed a courage to intervene, interrupt, reshape and regeneration, which is exactly what is lacking in current artistic creation.
Associate Professor of the School of Art of Nanjing University, the high-paid speech was titled "Abstract Painting and Inner Life - Look at Li Lei's Abstract Painting in the Abstract Painting Tradition". She tried to place Li Lei's paintings in the Western tradition of abstract painting and examined. She believes that the form and color of abstract art deal with people's inner emotions, rather than external. Abstract paintings further reflect the artist's precise control of all visual media and interpret Li Lei's three acrylic paintings on water.
Associate Professor, School of Government Management, Nanjing University Han Weihua talked about his thoughts on Li Lei's acrylic series works from the viewer's perspective. He believed that water and cloud are two important themes in Li Lei's acrylic series. Cloud, water and cessation constitute a dialogue. Li Lei reflects different style exploration through different variations of the same theme.
Professor of Philosophy Department of Nanjing University Lanjiang interprets abstract art and Li Lei's works from the perspective of Badiou's "view of events". This perspective believes that there is an art beyond language, meaning, knowledge, and emotion. When we face such paintings, it is impossible for us to restore its meaning with the ordinary chain of causal theory. At this level, abstract painting is an event that tear a hole in our ordinary viewing and daily experience, breaking the existing tension relationship. He believes that Li Lei's acrylic series will be shattered and whole, forming an artistic event in this sense.
Tianjin Normal University lecturer Liang Shuhan interprets the relationship between Li Lei's works and Chinese traditions. He believes that Li Lei's abstract painting continues the literati painting tradition since the Song Dynasty. Li Lei's high saturation color does not conflict with the Chinese tradition of " ink five-color ", and is therefore different from European and American abstract art. Furthermore, Li Lei mainly draws natural colors, while European and American abstract paintings have two main foundations: one is the standardized visual experience brought by the industrial era; the other is primitive .
Liu Yi, associate professor at the School of Art, Nanjing University, believes that Li Lei's works have two characteristics: first, the acrylic series reflects a polyphonic visual representation; second, Li Lei's creation is not limited to a single medium and has a strong cross-media nature. He believes that Li Lei is seeking poetry in the era of prose.
Wang Xiaosong, executive director of Shanghai Baolong Art Museum, pointed out that we should not ignore the role of art museums in art activities. It is the art museum that grafts artists and the public. He believes that the important role of art exhibitions is not to position an artist, but to discover gaps that the artist has not been discovered before, but to inspire new discussions to help artists and even larger artistic creation groups make progress.
Zhou Lei
Li Lei
Then, Zhou Xian and Li Lei had a conversation. In terms of the relationship between painting and artists, Zhou Xian believes that artists and works have three layers of relationships. On the first level, artists choose media to express their feelings, which are both private and public. The second level is that artists have a kind of concern for the human mental state, and in this sense, artists are also philosophers. The third level is that the artist's intention is also very important for the acceptance and interpretation of art, and thus presents the diversity of artistic interpretation. Li Lei believes that works are the carrier of artists' thoughts, but formed works will in turn influence artists. Of course, the artist only completes part of the work, and the other part is extracted and interpreted by readers, audiences, and analysts. This part has nothing to do with the artist himself. Regarding artistic tradition, Li Lei believes that tradition is relative to the present. We do not look at tradition from the perspective of tradition, but from the perspective of contemporary. Therefore, tradition must be beneficial to the solution of current problems. My "Poetry Porcelain" series is to re-examine traditions from a contemporary and current perspective, integrate my own thoughts and ideas, and reorganize traditions. Zhou Xian believes that all people are in tradition, and tradition is unselectable. But we can oppose the relationship between tradition, transformation of tradition, adjustment and tradition. Tradition is constantly invented. Traditions are also divided into explicit and implicit. Explicit traditions are easy to see, while implicit traditions need to be paid more attention to.
Liu Chunjie, director of Nanjing Academy of Calligraphy and Painting and Director of Jinling Art Museum, spoke
Finally, Liu Chunjie made a wonderful closing speech. Why do we talk about art now? Liu Chunjie believes that art can illuminate life and light up hope. The significance of Jinling Art Museum is to chase light for elderly artists and shine for young artists, and treat difficulties as "a medal" and not shine on clothes. He further explained the reason for the naming of Li Lei's art exhibition. The reason why it is called "the tone is not determined", first is because: abstract art is not determined, history is not determined, human beings do not die, and painting is not dead; second is because: Li Lei's creation is not determined, he has been actively exploring and changing his style, and his art has a brighter future; third is because: the form of the seminar is not determined, and the experts and scholars invited today are not critics in the art circle invited by the seminar.
The four-hour seminar attracted nearly 400 listeners to participate. The senior painter warned him: Every painting must have a "eye of painting". The speakers and scholars at this seminar each discovered the "eye of painting" of Li Lei's works from their own perspectives. They have different identities, some are art critics, some are academic scholars, and some are art gallery managers. The angle of discovery is naturally very different. After careful observation, these discoveries from different angles are just like the juxtaposition in Li Lei’s exhibition, and they also have tension between each other.
