[Global Network Military Report] On November 19, Taiwanese media released several pictures of the Taiwan military's " Kaohsiung " landing ship going to sea for testing. The ship is equipped with multiple mysterious components and is suspected to be testing the new phased array radar and vertical launch system .
From the picture, you can see a huge white polyhedral structure on the front deck of the ship. There are newly installed box-like parts in front of it. It is speculated that it is a phased array radar and a vertical launch device. In addition, a small tower-like structure has been added to the top of the bridge . It is speculated that it may be a short-range fire control radar .
According to " Zhongshi Electronic News ", the current "phase array + vertical launch system" is the standard configuration of the world's mainstream advanced destroyers. The mainland currently has three "Asian Shields" type 052C, 052D and 055, and Taiwan is obviously behind in this regard. Although the air defense capabilities of the "Success" and "Keelung" class are still pretty good, the search capabilities of mechanical electronic radars are still not comparable to those of phased array radars.
Taiwan's "Navy Navy" proposed the "Little Aegis" plan 30 years ago, intending to use the "success" level as a platform to transform it, but it was not successful. By 2014, Taiwan's "Navy" proposed the "Vision of the Reconstruction of Forces in the Next 15 Years", among which the "Sea Shock Plan" refers to "Advanced Air Defense System Destroyer". In the concept map released by the Taiwan Army, it is the "Aegis Shield Shield" equipped with phased array radar. The concept model was displayed at the Taipei Aeronautics Exhibition in 2015 and 2017. The Chinese Academy of Sciences in Taiwan also displayed the self-developed phased array radar system and the AESA radar launch unit.
However, after this, the relevant R&D progress suddenly fell silent, and news came out that the hull was too small and the radar was too heavy, which made the warship's center of gravity too high and had to be redesigned. Even at the 2019 Taipei Space Exhibition, the model of the "Asian Shield" was no longer displayed.
"China Times Electronic News" quoted expert analysis as saying that the "Kaohsiung" ship is obviously equipped with phased array radar, which should use a three- or four-sided array of radar antenna tower. Compared with the hull structure of the Kaohsiung ship, the size of this array tower is quite considerable. The previously rumored phased array radar is too heavy, and the original planned 4,500-ton hull cannot accommodate it seems that it is not groundless.
