European politicians are talking about the Taiwan issue again, and this time, they are involved in Hong Kong.

This week, European Parliament Vice Speaker Nicola Beer led a delegation to visit Taiwan and held a press conference with the foreign affairs department of Taiwan as it ended its trip on the 21st. At the meeting, Bell talked about his support for Taiwan and yelled to oppose "a move to unilaterally change the status quo." She even talked about Hong Kong, claiming that Europe must learn from Hong Kong and can't be naive about the Taiwan issue.

Bell is one of the 14 deputy speakers of the European Parliament. Members of the European Parliament are directly elected by EU 27 member states, and they exercise their responsibilities such as legislation, budget review and supervision of the EU's permanent executive body EU Commission .

" South China Morning Post " and Taiwan's green media Liberty Times reported on the 21st that Bell said at a press conference that the EU hopes to maintain good relations with mainland China, but this will not hinder support for Taiwan. She claimed that tensions in the Taiwan Strait would have an impact on Europe and therefore action must be taken to resolve the issue peacefully, and the European Parliament opposed "any unilateral move to change the status quo."

"The EU hopes to continue to maintain good relations with China (mainland), but this does not prevent us from making a (clear) statement." Bell also said that the European Parliament's wish is to "maintain the status quo" and "can't change the status quo against Taiwan's will."

Next, Bell claimed that Europe should "learn lessons" from Hong Kong and cannot continue to be "naive" on the Taiwan issue.

"(We) are too naive." Bell said that she believes that mainland China will "keep its promises" and "respect Hong Kong's special system on a democratic basis."

"This has not been achieved, so we have to learn from the lessons and not be too naive on the Taiwan issue. That's why we have expressed clear support for Taiwan...and this is one of the reasons why the European Parliament is outspoken on this issue".

Bell also said that her itinerary this time is to clearly express her support for Taiwan and send a "deterror" signal to mainland China.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, but politicians from the United States, Britain, including Bell, repeatedly made noises, claiming that Hong Kong's democracy and rule of law have been undermined and China has failed to fulfill its promise of " One Country, Two Systems ".

My Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on July 1 that some Western countries jumped out at this festive moment for the whole Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, and made irresponsible remarks on the practice of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong and citing tricks on Hong Kong affairs that are purely China's internal affairs. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this.

Zhao Lijian stressed that these countries often talk about democracy and human rights, but turn a blind eye to their own serious problems and bad deeds. They are not qualified to speak out about a prosperous, stable, united and forge ahead Hong Kong. We want to warn these countries that any smear on the successful practice of "one country, two systems" is futile, and any intervention in China's internal affairs will not succeed. No external force can stop the steady progress of "one country, two systems" and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.

Regarding Bell's visit to Taiwan, Zhao Lijian responded on the 19th that in the past two years, the European Parliament has issued resolutions related to Taiwan many times to support the "Taiwan independence" forces. This seriously violates the one-China principle of and poisons the atmosphere of China-Europe relations. China firmly opposes any form of official exchanges between Europe and Taiwan, and urges the EU to truly abide by the one-China principle and be cautious in speaking and doing things on Taiwan-related issues, so as to avoid serious interference in China-EU relations.

It is worth noting that although politicians like Bell try to hype the Taiwan issue to gain political capital, some European officials have also made rational voices.

Jorge Toledo Albinana, the new EU ambassador to China, mentioned the Taiwan issue on the 17th, saying, "We believe there should be only one China." The EU does not advocate "Taiwan independence", but supports peaceful reunification across the Taiwan Strait.He also opposed the " decoupling theory of " from the EU, insisting that China is an EU partner and that it is "necessary" to allow China to lead the world on the issue of global governance .
