According to China News Agency, Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen announced on the 14th that TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou will serve as the leader representative of this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Organization (APEC). This is his third consecutive year since his retirement.
This year's APEC meeting will be held in Santiago, Chile on November 16 and 17. Tsai Ing-wen held a press conference in her office that day to announce the above decision.
Tsai Ing-wen said at a press conference that she invited Zhang Zhongmou to serve as a representative again this year because Zhang Zhongmou has a high status in the international industry and has unique insights into the development of Taiwan's science and technology industry. He is the best candidate for dialogue on regional economy and trade and digital economy on behalf of Taiwan.
Zhang Zhongmou said that the digital economy not only brings contributions, but also unemployment and more serious problems of wealth and poverty. He attended the meeting again this time and had many opportunities to discuss with other representatives how to make full use of the contributions brought by the digital economy, and hopes to solve the problems brought by the digital economy.
Zhang Zhongmou, known as the "father of Taiwan's semiconductors", is an internationally renowned entrepreneur. Before 2006, Taiwan's leader Chen Shui-bian was in power and cross-strait relations were frozen, he served as the representative of APEC leaders for the first time. After Zhang Zhongmou officially retired from TSMC in June last year, he served as the role again. This year marks the third time he has served as a representative for two consecutive years since his retirement.
Industry insiders said that Zhang Zhongmou has international reputation, has a good understanding of the overall economy and the island's industries, and has strong foreign language skills. He is the right choice to serve as the representative of APEC leader.
