five tips for saving money in Japan!
01
BOOK-OFF
(㖃ックオフ)
Are you a fan and collector of animation?
BOOK-OFF (ブックオフ) is a second-hand bookstore, and the good thing about this place is that (except for cheap books) the books are stored very well! They have a 100 yen series, and there is a zone that gives you the opportunity to buy a series of books at a great price – like the following one.
Nowadays, the price of Japanese anime is around 450 to 850 yen (just a rough number). So finding 10 sets of 1,500 yen is about 150 yen per book (excluding tax), which is cheaper than 450 yen per book compared to the price of about 4,500 yen (excluding tax).
On the other hand, if you are not interested in anime or books, they also sell second-hand record CDs, digital multi-function audio and video DVDs, games, etc.
Usually every city has BOOK-OFF, so you can find the instructions for the store by simply using Google Map.
02
Tang Jikede Ji'an's Palace
(ドン・ホーテ/Don Quijote)
One of the popular discount stores in Japan! You can find almost everything here, from clothes and kitchen tableware to toys, cosmetics and food souvenirs!
Tang Jide Ji'an's palace has a duty-free shop for tourists, which is really an extra surprise!
Please reserve one to two hours to visit. If you want to shop, please be mentally prepared to buy a lot of things or have to carry the spoils in your hands all day long. Otherwise, it is recommended that you arrange the palace of Tang Jide Ji'an as the last stop of the day. You can browse their web pages to search for the store closest to you and keep an eye on business hours.

03
Baiyuan Store
In Japan, you can find many discount stores or duty-free shops (such as Tang Jide Ji'an's Hall), but don't forget that there are also many Baiyuan stores in Japan (such as Dachuang/Daiso)! They sell many interesting items such as souvenirs, or you need to buy some supplies on the go. It is really cheap to sell for only 100 yen (108 yen after adding taxes)!
04
Alcohol beverage
Buying wine in Japanese bars ( izakaya ) is already very cheap compared to other countries. A glass of wine (even a cocktail) is usually only 500 yen. In Australia, for example, a glass of wine is about $6 to $20. But buying wine from supermarkets is cheaper! For example, at the special offer, you can buy six bottles of beer for 800 yen. They even sell other alcohol in bottles or cans, allowing you to mix different flavors or brands of wines to taste.
So if you want to have a pleasant evening without spending too much budget, you can buy some wine and have a party at home.
Please note: If you already have friends living in Japan, why not ask if they also want to attend a drinking party, or where you live (such as Airbnb or some homestays in local homes) or you may also want to have a glass of wine or two?
05
Cheap food
It is normal to choose what to eat according to your own budget, especially when you want to spend money elsewhere, such as remembering, experiencing something, and/or buying something for yourself. But you can also eat cheaper at one of the meals of the day and eat a little more at lunch or dinner, or when you have figured out where to eat.
In Japan, food is not too expensive, but how can it be "cheap"?
DIY-Cook some simple foods like soba noodles
Convenience store food (Konbini) – Another cheap option
Supermarket (スーパー/su-pa) Special offer – Supermarket usually has an area dedicated to ready-to-eat food, and special promotions are usually held in the evening
Cheap street snacks – If you find it in your place
Prepare a hand ball is another useful and good way to do it – it can fill your stomach while you are on the way.
Use the above 5 methods to find the anime you want (cheap and well stored), eat and drink like locals, and then you can put more money on other experiences, such as going to Universal Studios Japan (USJ) or buying many souvenirs and snacks to share with your family and friends!
