Because humans abuse insecticides such as "DDT (DDT)" to prevent birds from reproducing normally, toxins spread and accumulate in the entire biological chain. Finally, DDT entered the human body...

DDT was a commonly used organochlorine pesticide in agriculture in order to prevent pests and diseases in the first half of the 20th century. However, this pesticide can also cause serious pollution to the environment while preventing pests and diseases in agriculture.

Nowadays, you will find that many well-known pesticides such as DDT have long disappeared. The change in Chinese people's attitude towards DDT and chemical pesticides is the greatest comfort to Xu Xiaobai, one of the pioneers of my country's environmental chemistry discipline and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who spoke loudly and ran for ten years.

In the early days of reform and opening up, Xu Xiaobai realized that if we do not pay attention to environmental protection in the process of economic development, then our country will repeat the mistake of "pollution first, then governance" experienced by developed countries. Therefore, environmental protection is urgent.

Since the late 1980s, Xu Xiaobai has been mainly engaged in interdisciplinary research on environmental chemical behavior, ecological toxicology and distribution survey of toxic organic compounds, and has achieved a series of results in the management and control of environmental toxicants, filling the domestic gap.

Starting from 1995, 68-year-old Xu Xiaobai, commissioned by the State Environmental Protection Administration, conducted a preliminary investigation on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), providing an important scientific basis for my country to participate in negotiations on International Convention on on persistent organic pollutants.

POPs refer to natural or artificially synthesized organic pollutants that can migrate long distances and exist in the environment for a long time through various environmental media (atmosphere, water, organisms, etc.), have long-term residual, bioaccumulative, semi-volatile and highly toxic, and are seriously harmful to human health and the environment.

In 1997, Xu Xiaobai proposed to investigate several POPs in the new provisions of UN Environment Programme , including studying the characteristics of pesticides DDT, chlorodan, hexachlorobenzene, industrial chemical PCDDs, PCDFs and other substances. In 1998, she wrote a letter to the leaders of the National Environmental Protection Administration, begging the National Environmental Protection Administration to establish projects on the POPs issue.

In May 2001, the international community jointly adopted the " Stockholm Convention " (hereinafter referred to as the Stockholm Convention or "Convention"). The Convention requires the control of 12 persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including "DDT (DDT)" and effectively eliminate them globally.

In 2004, based on the results of years of research on persistent organic pollutants and the current situation of environmental pollution and ecological impact caused by persistent organic pollutants in China, she organized industry experts to jointly submit a letter to the government, calling on China to join the Stockholm Convention as soon as possible.

On November 11, 2004, the Stockholm Convention officially came into effect on my country, marking that the Chinese government has become a formal party to the Convention and has begun to fully fulfill the obligations entrusted by the Convention.

On April 14, 2007, the State Council approved the "National Implementation Plan for the People's Republic of China to implement the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants", and determined my country's compliance goals, measures and specific actions. All this is inseparable from Xu Xiaobai's important contribution to China's environmental protection cause.
