In 2017, Dorna Sports announced that it had signed a five-year contract with Finland's Kymi Ring. It was originally scheduled to officially join the MotoGP schedule in 2020. However, it encountered the outbreak of the new crown epidemic around the world, so it had to be cancelled. The global epidemic situation in 2021 did not improve, and the number of confirmed cases in various countries increased steadily, and the Finnish station also chose to suspend it again.
Safety concerns about FIA first-class track?
There are two reasons for the cancellation in 2022, one of which is related to the safety of the racing stadium. Kymi Ring's initial design aimed at the FIA (four-wheel) first-level track and the first-level events such as MotoGP (second-round). However, Kymi Ring's FIA first-level license certification has been approved, but the FIM has not yet approved the safety review.
About Kymi Ring's security specifications, MotoGP security director Franco Uncini and FIM security director Pablo Duparc both said that Kymi Ring does not currently have major design issues that need to be corrected, so there is no need for major construction readjustment, but some "small issues" in details still require time to improve.
When cornering, you can use three gears at most
Although the heads of the security department of FIM and MotoGP said that there is no problem, MotoGP conducted a small test in Kymi Ring in 2019. After the test, Alex Rins mentioned that the track of Kymi Ring is small and the curve design is very compact. Most of the time, it can be switched back and forth between one and three gears. Before entering the straight section, you can only use three gears at most. Although the cornering speed is relatively low, up to 18 corners are squeezed together and ridden at one time, which is very stressful for both the driver and the vehicle.
The war also pushed for a suspension
In addition to the epidemic, the war also led to the decision to suspend races. The virus can be prevented through disinfection and vaccines, but the political and economic impact of the war is difficult to grasp. The Ukrainian-Russian War broke out at the beginning of this year has a huge impact. Racing drivers from Russia and Belarus were banned from racing. Many motorcycle brands have withdrawn from the Russian market one after another, while Finland and Russia are directly bordering.
