Recently, I plan to take my family to Kyushu, Japan, so I have been busy planning the route early and booking various hotels and trains. After comparing various OTAs such as Ctrip, Booking, Agoda and Japan, we finally chose Agoda to book the main hotels of this trip.

hasn't been updated for a long time, and I almost forgot my login password for a long time.

The reason why I supported me to climb up this time was actually a complaint.

recently planned to take his family to travel to Kyushu in Japan, so he was busy planning the route early and booking various hotels and trains. After comparing various OTA prices such as Ctrip, Booking, Agoda and Japan, I finally chose Agoda to book the main hotels of this trip. The reason is nothing more than the cooperation between Agoda and VISA. You can enjoy a 18% discount on booking with a VISA card through the exclusive link (although the original price of this discount is higher than the normal booking price of Agoda).

Agoda and VISA cooperation activity

I thought I had made a big and small advantage, but I didn’t expect the problem to come.

The one that exposed the problem was the order of Beppu Tide Sao Su-Hyuki.

As a hotel I am looking forward to during this trip, Chaosai Suo Qinghai was ordered on February 11 through the CCB VISA credit card and booked to check in on March 7 after several comparisons. Out of habit, the choice on Agoda is to settle in RMB, which can be cancelled for free before March 1, and the price of the booking page is equivalent to RMB 3,665.

After the reservation was completed, Agoda "My Booking" had reservation information, but the tax included price of 59,642 yen for both rooms (unfortunately there were no screenshots). Yes, although you chose RMB settlement, the My Booking page only shows the price of the yen, and there is no RMB fee. The exchange rate is about RMB 1 = 16.27 yen.

Even if you choose RMB settlement, the amount of yen is still displayed in "My Booking"

During this period, other hotels were booked one after another in Agoda, and the ones you choose were settled in RMB. According to Agoda's tip, the settlement will be carried out in RMB equivalent to the deduction date, and there may be exchange rate differences. Thinking that the RMB exchange rate has been rising in the past few days, I still feel secretly happy.

What happened to me.

In the early morning of March 1, the mobile phone received the deduction of CCB, showing that the deduction of 3774.98 yuan. Nani? ! An extra 100 yuan was deducted? And in terms of conversion, the settlement exchange rate is almost 1 yuan = 15.79 yen. On that day (March 1), the listed exchange rate of Bank of China was 100 yen = 6.0256 yuan, which is approximately 1 yuan = 16.59 yen.

The exchange rate difference between is so huge!

The actual settlement price of RMB

was called to the CCB customer service earlier and confirmed that the fee was directly deducted by Agoda, and there were no handling fees, conversion fees and other issues. So the question is, how did Agoda convert the price of 3774.98 yuan?

is called and Agoda's customer service is very polite. After listening to the description of the problem, I immediately gave two choices. The speed is very fast and I can't help but suspicious. This way of handling is commonplace and familiar to Agoda:

1. Confirm all orders immediately. Agoda will settle the exchange rate on the day of booking and return the order difference that has been generated to me.

2. Keep the original deduction time unchanged. After checking in, I call Agoda and then return all the difference in one lump sum.

I chose the solution to solve this problem. A rough calculation shows that the amount of economic losses is as much as 500 yuan.

But has the problem been solved? NO.

The obvious point is that Agoda did not remind customers in advance about third-party exchange rates and US dollar settlement issues.

Secondly, the customer service gave a reminder while solving the problem - if this is the case in the future, we will not be able to refund the difference - According to my understanding, similar problems will not only happen to me, nor will they only happen to the present, but will always exist.

In fact, I have also asked the customer service core exchange rate issues, but Agoda has always been vague. According to customer service, all orders ultimately need to be settled in US dollars, and the exchange rate of the US dollar is given by a third-party company, not the real-time exchange rate we usually understand. But customer service staff cannot answer what the US dollar exchange rate is, how to convert between multiple exchange rates, and whether it includes currency conversion fees.I just suggest that I make reservations in the future, choose local currency to settle, or confirm immediately, so as to avoid the fluctuation of the exchange rate.

But for travelers, it is obviously inappropriate to confirm immediately for a trip that is prone to repeated; it can be settled by local currency, and whether the exchange rate is locked and how to convert it, customer service cannot answer.

Related complaints that can be searched

From the perspective of protecting oneself from less affected by exchange rate fluctuations, Agoda's practice of setting a protective exchange rate for settlement is understandable. However, it does not explain to the customers in advance, nor does it indicate the relevant exchange rate explicitly, which gives people a feeling of being trapped in secret.

search for Du Niang, it seems that Agoda's exchange rate trap has a long history, and Agoda seems to have no intention of changing this stubborn disease (the time span is from 2011 to 2018). Well, I also want to be a thriller. I hope that when choosing an OTA, you don’t just pay attention to the price, and you have to be careful of all kinds of unexpected pitfalls.

PS: In Agoda's questionnaire, I gave an unsurprising answer to whether to continue to use Agoda to book in the future.
