[Mobile China News] On December 22, according to Taiwan's United Daily News, TSMC's board of directors decided to set up a US $3.5 billion wafer foundry in November, and TSMC's "Ministry of Economics" Investment Review Conference approved its overseas investment today. TSMC plans to set up a 12-inch wafer factory in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, and is expected to start production of 5nm process products in the first half of 2024.

TSMC plans to build a 12-inch wafer factory in Phoenix City, Arizona, USA. The new factory will start construction in 2021, install and trial production in 2023, and be put into production on a large scale in the first half of 2024. At that time, the latest 5nm process will be directly deployed with a planned monthly production capacity of 20,000 wafers.

However, since TSMC plans to mass-produce the next generation of 3nm chips in 2022, mass-produce the enhanced version of 3nm Plus in 2023, and is expected to mass-produce 2nm in 2024, so after the completion of the American factory, 5nm will not be the latest process.

In May this year, TSMC announced that with the common understanding and commitment of the US federal government and the Arizona government, it intends to build and operate an advanced wafer factory in the United States and will directly create 1,600 high-tech jobs. During the period 2021-2029, TSMC will spend about US$12 billion on this plant.
