Preface

Breaking thinking and transcending reality picture book style puzzle "GOROGOA" has made fans look forward to it for five years since the release of production. "GOROGOA" announced its first trial version in 2012, and then won the 2014 IGF Award just by making the trial version. What is amazing is that the entire work, from hand-painted art, programming to puzzle design, was completed by developer Jason Roberts. As a programmer, Jason is not good at painting. He put in a lot of effort to make this game work, drawing each picture with a pencil hand-drawn and scan, and then learned animation production from scratch to make them come to life.

After winning the IGF in 2014, Jason said in an interview that although the game is still a certain distance from his goal, it "will have to be released this year" because "the funds are about to run out." He was then lucky to receive aid from the Indie Fund, which was favored by Annapurna Interactive, who provided great help to Jason: a considerable amount of funds, and sufficient logistical support. Therefore, Jason was able to spend the extra three years to continue to work hard and finally handed over an answer that satisfies himself and his fans. (Like Annapurna)

Play method introduction video process

Jason uses cleverly designed puzzles and carefully woven fables to bring players a wonderful journey of surprises and eyes; the game uses a lot of pencil drawings, fresh watercolors and complex hand-painted decorative patterns to the game also fills the game process with pleasant visual enjoyment. As shown in the initial trial version, the operating rules of "GOROGOA" are extremely simple: players need to carefully observe several pictures located in 2×2 square squares, explore the details in the picture by zooming in and out and scrolling, move the picture frame by dragging the mouse, and piece together or superimposing different pictures to create connections, and ultimately promote the development of the story plot. Appreciating the picture itself is a considerable degree of enjoyment, and the exquisite animations when solving each puzzle can bring strong satisfaction to the players. The time and space in the four pictures will change both wonderfully and reasonably with each step of the player's operation, which makes the player imaginatively enchanted by the author Jason Roberts's wild design ideas.

The author does not recommend any excellent puzzle game to pass the video, and "GOROGOA" is naturally among the top ones. The exquisite graphics and whimsical puzzles of this work can keep players surprised in the short two-hour game process, and this surprise is worthy of personal experience for every player who loves painting and puzzle solving. In addition, even the details of the picture that are not related to the puzzle are worthy of careful appreciation; even if you go straight to the correct answer, you will pass by the hints related to certain plots.

Game review

What is GOROGOA?

When game developer Jason Roberts released the work in 2012, he told Eurogamer in an interview that GOROGOA was the name he gave to the fantasy behemoth in his childhood.

On December 15, 2017, we all know that "GOROGOA" is a masterpiece that will be recorded in the history of independent games.

About puzzle design

From 2012 to the trial version of "GOROGOA" until the official version was released, the author was amazed at the exquisite conception, and was also vaguely worried about whether the author could master the puzzle design. Readers who have been exposed to more puzzle games must not be difficult to imagine that for those gameplay displayed in the trial version, improperly designed puzzles will be a nightmare - players are busy trying to figure out what the author is thinking in their mind, or repeatedly trying to take luck until the image is successfully combined somewhere - in short, it will be a work that is flashy and difficult to call puzzle solving. The excellent performance of the official version eliminates this worry: the puzzle design of the game cleverly bypasses all kinds of mistakes and successfully reaches the end.

The core gameplay of "GOROGOA" determines that it can only be a work that looks for the author's preset solution. However, Jason cleverly guides the player's intuition in the details of the game, magically making the intuitive guesses with a little bit of thinking. The puzzle design of the game follows the basic principle of step-by-step puzzle game: from the simplest lattice splicing, to the protagonist and the item traveling between different lattices, to the mutual influence across the lattice (magnet puzzle), the relationship between movement (gear), the game's last ladder puzzle even has elements similar to platform puzzle solving. More importantly, the ambiguity in the solution to the puzzle of "GOROGOA" has not become a disadvantage. Its unique unique puzzle-solving experience between intuition and logic just makes me unable to stop.

"GOROGOA" puzzle screen

The author obviously has his own considerations for this design problem: although the dreamy hazy beauty in the trial version is one of the important reasons why many enthusiasts love "GOROGOA", Jason still mentioned in an interview not long ago that he was worried about players losing their clues during a long game. Therefore, he carefully balanced the story and puzzle design in the official release version of "GOROGOA", so that they had a certain degree of coherence and consistency while trying to maintain the original hazy beauty. It is actually quite difficult to polish such a short and concise work: the design of every detail requires the creativity and difficulty gradient of the puzzle, and the narrative theme and rhythm of the whole article must be taken into account. Any unreasonable and unsmooth part will cause obvious discomfort to the player. During the development process, Jason often makes major adjustments and deletions to previous work. Regarding the puzzles that appear in the trial version and are deleted in the official version, Jason said: "I don't like them, but they are no longer in the game."

Demo game screen

However, perhaps for the same reason, the game even provides highlighting tips for the key interactive animals in the scene, and set it to turn on by default when the player runs the game - but this is a bit overdone. The author sincerely recommends that players who are willing to experience this masterpiece patiently turn off this highlighting prompt function. Because if players carefully observe each picture while appreciating each picture, they will extract absolutely sufficient hints from the reliefs of the wooden cabinet, the text in a corner of the manuscript, the patterns of decorative paintings, etc.In contrast, the bright aperture and obvious prompt sound are too simple and crude, which makes it seem a bit burning the piano and boiling the crane, and it is not clear about the charm.

About game art

(The author is not a professional, so I don’t comment on factors such as body lines and color schemes here, but make a simple discussion on the overall idea of game art.)

If "Undertale" makes symbolic narrative to the extreme, then the "symbols" everywhere in "GOROGOA" are to make symbolic art to the extreme. The most obvious are naturally those spiral marks representing fruits - the seat cushion embroidered with symbols representing red fruits and their acquisition methods; the four-frame comics marked with green symbols in the picture frame clearly point out the story of the door in the picture becoming a real gate and the way to obtain apples in the fairy statue (marked with pencils in the picture); the guide statue holding a yellow symbol guides the little boy from day to night to get the fruit; the blue symbol indicates the correct picture and direction in the rotation puzzle. In addition, there is a wooden cabinet that takes the stars into the story of the oil lamp, and a file that paints the North Star and the compass... The author hides the puzzle solution in an abstract way in a corner of the game screen, helping players solve puzzles in a more elegant way than direct prompts. More importantly, the "symbols" in the game not only provide hints for the puzzle solving process, but also point out the direction for players to interpret the storyline: the horse-body fish-tail constellation (the image and meaning are suspected to be taken from the sheep-body fish-tail, and originated from the God of Wisdom in Sumerian mythology) and the broken horse-body fish-tail statue are consistent with the theme "seeking knowledge" in Chapter 3. The rich images in the religious elements that appear repeatedly in Chapter 4 are also worth savoring. The complex track lines and the train that arrive at the station are full of strong hints about the end of the game and the end of life... vary.

The orientation of the blue fruit symbol indicates the correct rotation angle

In the early days of game development, Jason tried to draw surreal fantasy scenes, but he eventually changed his mind - because he realized that the more ordinary the game scene was, the stronger the surprise the player would feel when he found the connection between scenes.

Considering the game itself and Jason's background as a programmer for more than ten years, the experience of discovering a new world in the subtleties of the picture in the game makes people easily think of the concept of fractals in mathematics and the "infinity" meaning it contains. If you are more bold to guess, this may also be one of the sources of the image design of the giant beast GOROGOA. Now take the most well-known fractal graphic M set (M-set, Mandelbrot set) as an example. The M set can be defined by the following polynomial: f(z) = z^2 +c, where c is an arbitrary complex parameter. Depending on the value taken by the complex parameter c, the value of the polynomial may diverge or converge to a specific value. Set M is the set of all complex parameters c that converges the polynomial on the complex plane. The self-similar (partially repeated overall) characteristics of M sets and the incredibly delicate outline may have something in common with the decorative patterns drawn by Jason for GOROGOA.

Regarding the game size

For the author, the two-hour game length is just right for "GOROGOA". An obvious fact is that no matter how novel the creativity is or how high the implementation is, the length of game time that the same gameplay can support is destined to be limited (current World of Warcraft and sticky games such as Onmyoji are not discussed). Although as a player, he is naturally unsatisfied after passing the level, what if we suppose Jason Roberts and rely on limited resources to force "GOROGOA" into a 20-hour game? It is not difficult to foresee that the game will inevitably repeat itself in terms of art resources and gameplay, or its puzzle design will fall into the vicious circle of pursuing excessive harshness and complexity. In fact, it is no different from Disney screenwriter writing daily sitcoms after Princess "living happily together" and letting short stories masters write serial columns. "GOROGOA" is not a satisfying buffet, but a delicate little bit, a tea ceremony that will last for a while.Jason Roberts spent five years drawing every exquisite illustration, scene and decorative pattern, creating every frame of clever animation, pondering every puzzle, and then giving them all the best in just two hours of game time, bringing players a short, yet wonderful game experience. What am I talking about?

A classic error case is the skill design in the second half of the game "Ori and the Blind Forest". After the well-received Silver Tree escape level, the skill list was over-inflated, making the buttons and operations inevitably complicated (especially the Ultimate Edition), and the level also changed from a free and open design that left players with sufficient room to show their magical powers to a "author teaches you to play games"--"Did you see this cracked stone slab? Then jump with your energy!" and so on. Although the music and art have maintained a high level throughout the whole process, the later skill design has to be said to be more dull. Whether it is gliding or charging jumping, the surprise and pleasure it brings to players cannot be compared with the slam skills that change the combat style from the mechanic level, and the game experience will never be broken after the peak of Silver Tree's escape.

can be regarded as the peak of platform action level design in recent years Silver Tree Escape

I personally agree with Jason's self-reported statement about the length of the game: "I am very happy that the game is not longer than it is now. About two years ago this work had about two hours of game time, and I have been working on refining and polishing this two-hour work instead of making it longer. Everyone will have to admit that this is correct. The choice - but I know not everyone will do it. My opinion is that the length of this game is not just a result of insufficient resources. I think that every game scene should have meaning in the overall narrative while being a puzzle. When designing puzzles, there is often the urge to put as many things as possible in them, but when telling stories, you must make drastic efforts to get the essence. Moreover, "GOROGOA" does not adjust the narrative and gameplay separately like many games- "GOROGOA" is a carefully woven fable. Introducing more scenes for the sake of gameplay will destroy its narrative rhythm. I hope this work is meaningful to people. I value the experience it brings to people." (Translation)

About game narrative

"too obscure" - I believe many players will comment on the narrative of "GOROGOA" like this. However, one thing that can be determined by actual play or through author self-report is that almost every detail in the game has the corresponding narrative meaning behind it, and the author carefully designs the way they are revealed to ensure that although they are obscure, they are accurate enough.

However, it is impossible to deny that the narrative of "GOROGOA" still contains too many unknowns, or too much blank space is left. We also need to see the two sides of this: a certain degree of unknowability is naturally necessary for fables; on the other hand, the obscure narrative is doomed to prevent the existence of an exact story built by a strict logical chain in the game. Likes and dislikes are naturally left to all players to judge, but the manifestation of this ambiguity and haze is the uniqueness of "GOROGOA", which is something Jason tried to do and did wonderfully. Several time lines are as complicated and intertwined as the movie "Cloud Map". The same objects, similar images and subtle plots appear repeatedly in the story, making the entire work surrounded by a dreamlike atmosphere. For example, the various crutches accompanying the protagonist's life at all stages, the same candlesticks running through the game, the more and more manuscripts and documents that silently tell the hardships of pursuit... and so on.The relationships in imagery are like the puzzle of stone crushing a circular glass cover in Chapter 3 and the subtle synesthesia of the young man's thought of meteorite crushing a dome building: (It is worth noting that the container label paper containing stones is from a meteorite legend in a previous astronomical picture!)

GOROGOA's narrative does not push the game to a higher level in art form like "Braid" or "The Great Eagle of Man-Can's Big Vulture", but it still uses its unique silent animation and obscure fables to show the beauty of the narrative. For example, in the fourth chapter of the game, there are three exquisite objects placed on the wooden table beside the middle-aged man sitting by the window: the copper bell ringing during a pilgrimage in the scorching sun, one of the countless candlesticks lit in sequence in front of the altar during a pilgrimage in the forest, and the silver spoon that sprinkled the holy water on his own in the biting cold wind on the snowy mountain tops. If it is an ordinary animated movie, these three objects already contain sufficient symbolic meaning, and "GOROGOA" uses unique game language to present these three scenes to the players in sequence: through the tireless footsteps of the pilgrimage man, turning those "gears" one by one - the mural-style sun, the church's stained glass windows and the blue and white porcelain plates painted with complex patterns - find out the path hidden behind these beliefs, so that the little boy can walk between photo frames representing different periods of his life. If you are speaking plainly, maybe a man once relied on the tranquility power brought by faith to walk through the bumps and bumps of life, but the pain of failure and falling lingered like a shadow - a similar feeling.

Although the game is a book, you won’t get additional plot content when you start the game again, but this does not mean that "GOROGOA" has no value for repeated play. The game screen is naturally worthy of repeated appreciation, and at least - I think most players need to play twice to interpret the meaning of this fable picture book in their own eyes.

Conclusion

In short, with the release of "GOROGOA", the puzzle art family has added another new member. As a player, I think we need a work like "GOROGOA", not only because we want to play such an excellent game, but also because of the inspiration it brings to game makers. The 2017 TGA game of the year "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" has been favored by players for its stunning visual guidance of open-world design. However, independent game master Jonathan Blow's work "The Witness" in early 2016 has realized this design idea with amazing completion, and he even began to make corresponding ideas as early as 2008.

The stunning open world in "The Witness"

Like basic scientific research in industrial applications, experimental movie short films in Hollywood, independent games have never been obscure works of art that only a few people can appreciate and are meaningful to a few players. Because of the small size of independent games, they often reflect the author's strong personal style and creativity, and every excellent creativity born will be accepted by the industry and ultimately benefit the players. It is possible that seemingly incomprehensible views and creativity will show wonderful and unique value from different perspectives. It is compatible with every fresh creativity and carry forward every amazing gameplay, so that game developers can broaden their horizons and produce brand new and high-quality game works - and this is the greatest blessing for us players. This time we might as well quote Jason Roberts' thoughts on the puzzle to conclude:

I believe that behind everything there is a special meaning, and people need to be aware of it through a specific perspective. If you look at the world and don’t find anything, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist – what we need to think about is why we haven’t found them yet and what challenges we still need to go through.

Plot discussion

In the eyes of different readers, the meaning of the fable "GOROGOA" is naturally different. Some readers think it describes the pain of war, while others think it describes the passage of time... The author should not have defined it as an open-ended story in an evaluation article because it is shameful to play. Here it is just a little personal thoughts, just to throw a brick and attract jade. Players who have some feelings may wish to reply and discuss (please fold it if you spoil it).

Spoiler Warning:

First of all, it is almost certain that "GOROGOA" is a story about life. Men of different ages and states appear in the game are the protagonists at different stages of life - those canes with different shapes that never leave their bodies are proof of. Going further, this is a story about pursuit, loss and redemption.

Red fruit:

Elements: Wisdom Seeking Knowledge Cost

Among all five fruits, the red fruit is the only one that the boy took the initiative to obtain. He just leaned against the wall and thought about the red symbol, and the apple fell into the bowl by chance as the bird flew up the treetops. Whether it is borrowing the records of Adam, Eve and the Red Apple in the Bible, or the anecdotes of physicist Newton and Apple, this plot seems to be nothing more than a reference to images such as wisdom, discovery, and seeking knowledge. At this time, the protagonist is still a young man, and it is the first time that the player has experienced the beauty of the puzzle. This was attracted by the figure flashing through the sky of the city, so he decided to set out to pursue the youthful days full of fantasy and reverie.

Green Fruit:

Elements: Life Hope Gift

In the second photo frame at the boy's home, a traveler entered a fairyland when he was dying: under the scorching sun, the traveler had already been exhausted, crawling on the ground and struggling, facing the door drawn on the wall, praying hard. In the blink of an eye, the door in the painting becomes real, and the traveler can enter a green garden like a fairyland. The fairy in the garden held a stone apple in his hand. Just as the traveler was at a loss, he kept looking at the apple with a mark with a pencil. The apple was given a verdant color and rolled into the traveler's hands.

is in despair to help the divine power (at least supernatural power) to gain hope... This may be the understanding of the word hope in the eyes of young people at that time.

Yellow fruit:

Elements: Starlight Light Thinking Moth Capricorn (pseudo)

The search for yellow fruit begins with a relief on the wooden cabinet: a girl reaches out to pick the stars in the night sky, put it in an oil lamp, and there is a bright spot around her. The signs of horse-body fish tails shining in the night sky (Capricorn suspected to be taken from the sheep-body fish tails) symbolize wisdom, and the moths flying out of the broken glass cover seem to contain a metaphor of freedom. It sounds a bit romantic, but the thinking and pursuit alone under the light is destined to be deserted, lonely, and even depressed. If you want to give a metaphor to your thoughts, it is destined not to be the scorching sun at noon, but the stars shining alone in the night sky.

The boy set off at noon in the garden under the guidance of a statue holding a yellow fruit symbol, traveling through the afternoon, dusk and night, and finally picking this brilliant star between the stars.

Blue Fruit:

Elements: Pilgrimage Religion Rotate Repeat

In the chapter of blue fruit, three exquisite utensils are placed on the wooden table beside the middle-aged man sitting by the window: a copper bell ringing during pilgrimage in the scorching sun, one of the countless candlesticks lit in sequence in front of the altar during pilgrimage in the forest, and the silver spoon that he sprinkled the holy water on his own in the biting cold wind on the snowy mountain tops.

The image of "rotating wheel" is often used to refer to the passage of time, if negatively speaking, even represents meaningless recurrence - because a man who devoutly devotes his faith to pray for peace recalls his fall when he was lost, and in extreme depression, he pushed the table away and smashed the object to pieces.

Purple Fruit:

Elements: Train, Bell Tower, Terminal Journey, Memory,

Purple Fruit obviously has the meaning of "end". Whether you take a tram and go around in complex tracks, or climb up to the top of the tower under various instructions, or even as the last color purple itself in the visible spectrum, you cannot avoid the word end point - it is both the end point of the boy's two pursuits, perhaps the end point of life, and the end point of the game journey. In addition, the old man's mind was constantly trying to splice manuscripts and document fragments, and splicing tapestries embroidered with various patterns, symbolizing the memory fragments that were difficult to sort out during his life journey.

Ending

The young man who collected five fruits contributed to the dragon in the way recorded in the book page, but the dragon closed his eyes and rejected the boy. The world suddenly became dark, and the boy fell from the clouds because he still didn't understand the true meaning of the fruit, and this true meaning was not as easy as reaching out to pick the fruit and throwing it into a big bowl. The foreshadowing of the ending was laid at the beginning of the game: the illustration recorded between the pages of the thick book, a young man and an old man jointly held up a container full of symbols representing the five fruits. The gray-haired old man climbed to the top of the bell tower again many years later, and the game achievement icons in the first five chapters also clearly describe the meaning of the five fruits.

The red fruit is a drop of bright red blood. The boy continued to flip the pages and found a red symbol on the broken container recorded in the subsequent pages, falling, disability, and blood-stained pages. What is required for departure is not accidental and impulse, but for the oath and determination drawn in blood.

The green fruit is a bright green bud. The man in ragged clothes relies on his crutches to find the green garden again in the most subtle place among the fragments on the ground after the disaster, and to find hope again. Hope is not given by others, but the faintest belief that remains in despair. The future is with えられるモノでなく, and the future is to win するるモだから.

The yellow fruit is a bright flame. The moths outside the window gently flapped their wings, silently crossing the night with stars and the Milky Way, turning into a ball of flame at the brightest star in the night sky. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh What we need for thinking and pursuit is not only the cold loneliness under the dim oil lamp, but also the enthusiasm and willingness to do everything like a moth to a fire.

The blue fruit is a flowered window glass. The pilgrims took the pace again under the setting sun, and the broken but still exquisite roulette began to rotate slowly again. Beliefs with obsession and purpose are destined to end with disappointment, and only in firmness and peace can we find the true meaning.

The purple fruit is a pieced together puzzle. The old man's mind was first dark, then he traveled through the layers of memories under the manuscript and returned to the childhood bedroom - there was an extra item on the small bed, and it was the small cushion embroidered with birds and red apples when he set off. The end of the journey is meaningless, if the traveler forgets the original intention of his departure.

The boy spent his youth full of fantasy, a romantic youth in desperate situations, a middle-aged man who was thinking hard at the table under the lamp, a depressed middle-aged man sitting in front of the window, a depressed and depressed old man who was alone in self-salvation... In the retrospective of memory, he completed his life journey, and went through pain and hardship to reach the end. Reality and fantasy time and space are intertwined like dreams, and the four squares contain infinite spaces, and eternity is told in just one hour. Whether it is "the ancients learned without any effort, and they will be able to achieve their hard work in their old age" or "hearing the truth in the morning, dying in the evening", he suddenly realized the things he had been pursuing since childhood at the end of his life. The old man straightened his back and looked towards the sky, shrouded by the halo emitted by the five talismans, and then disappeared into the holy and dazzling light. The divine dragon that has been pursuing since childhood has appeared its true body, and its pupils are reflected infinity and eternity, making a sound that seems to be from another distant world...

Achievement Guide

"GOROGOA" has a short game process and the achievements are very simple. All achievements can be purchased within 2 to 4 hours of game time. There is no operational difficulty in achieving success, and the most difficult "only fast and not break" only requires memorizing the game process. The last four achievements in the following table are hidden achievements. Readers who do not want to be spoiled should skip this section.

Relying on intuition and logic to solve puzzles, you only need to carefully observe the details of the picture and supplement it with reasonable association, and there is no need to try it randomly.

  • The plot with far-reaching meaning

    life.

  • is not difficult enough

There is no difficult logic puzzle in "GOROGOA" that requires players to rack their brains to think hard. In other words, it is not "fun" enough under the standards of puzzle solving genres. However, "GOROGOA" is closer to an interactive story picture book, and puzzle solving is only a small part of its value.

  • is not suitable for everyone

The allegorical plot is destined not to be accepted by all players, and many players think it is too short - yes, GOROGOA does tell the whole story wonderfully, but this story is indeed very short.
