Review of historical events
Time: 5:52 pm on June 29, 1996
Location: Seoul, South Korea (Seoul)
Number of casualties is more than 1,000
Economic losses: More than 270 billion won (approximately RMB 1.57 billion)
Incident passed
This is not accidental, a tragedy that occurred due to poor design, construction, and maintenance management.
This department store was completed in 1989. The initial architectural structure was designed as a four-story office building. Because it was located in the wealthy area of the central area of Seoul, Seoul, at that time, it was converted into a commercial department store by Sanfeng Group. The original four-story building was built as a leisure and dining area. At this point, a four-story office building that was not a commercial building was perfectly transformed into a modern four-story and five-story commercial department store after repeated renovations and expansions.
The original appearance of the building and the air conditioner on the roof
A few months before the incident, there were signs of cracks collapsed, but the report was made to the building manager but did not pay attention.
On the morning of June 29, there were signs of severe cracks on the fifth layer. According to a shopping mall employee, "I felt that the mall was stuffy and there was no air conditioner on. I told the manager to turn on the air conditioner. At this time, I heard a loud noise. The manager told the salesperson that it was the sound of the air conditioner on the rooftop operating normally." The manager then went upstairs to check and found cracks on the 5th floor and reported them to the management. The senior staff decided to operate normally and carry out maintenance work simultaneously. At this time, about 1,000 customers and employees were not aware of it. At 6 p.m., the fifth floor began to collapse, and the building appeared in dust columns and completely collapsed in just twenty seconds.
After the collapse of the building,
On-site rescue scene
Accident caused a total of 501 deaths, 6 missing and 937 injured. This is the biggest casualty accident since the South Korean War, compared to the "Sheng Water Bridge Collapse Incident" (October 21, 1994) a year ago. A total of 25 people in charge of department stores, including Li Jun, chairman of Sanfeng Group, were prosecuted.

The post-investigation results are as follows:
First, the building cut corners during the construction process, and the number of building steel bars was halved;
Secondly, the government and chaebol colluded to accept bribes and illegally expanded and changed to commercial buildings;
Finally, Sanfeng Group's management was improper, including moving 24-ton air-conditioning plug-ins to the roof, and improper cracks were handled in the building.
These three factors together caused the tragedy of the collapse of the building.
Reflection
South Korea has been very uneasy in recent years. The "Season Issue Shipwreck", "Helicopter crashed into the city", " Park Geun-hye stepped down", " Lotte Group President and Samsung President were investigated" and other events undoubtedly show that South Korea, a country controlled by the "chaebol", has nothing to do with the government. All events occur both contingent and inevitable. It is also warning enterprises to slow down while developing rapidly and seek progress while maintaining stability. They should not unilaterally pursue economic growth at the expense of civil rights and interests. As for us, we should improve our public safety awareness and prevent problems before they happen. Only in this way can we avoid tragedies as much as possible.
