UMC announced that its board of directors has approved a new plan to build a new manufacturing plant next to Singapore's 300mm fab.

UMC announced that its board of directors has approved a new plan to build a new manufacturing plant next to the 300mm fab (Fab 12i) currently located in Singapore . The new factory will have a monthly production capacity of 30,000 wafer pieces per month at each stage, and is expected to start production by the end of 2024.

Unhua Electronics has been operating a wafer foundry in Singapore for more than 20 years, and is also equipped with an advanced professional technology research and development center. The newly built wafer factory is called Fab12i P3 and will become one of the most advanced semiconductor facilities in Singapore. It is equipped with a production line with a 22/28nm process, and the entire project is planned to invest US$5 billion. Due to the need to build the Fab12i P3, UX Electronics' capital expenditure budget in 2022 will be raised to US$3.6 billion.

Unhua Electronics' new wafer fab has received many customer support from signing long-term supply agreements to ensure production capacity in 2024 and beyond, reflecting trends in the 5G, Internet of Things and automotive sectors. The new fab will introduce special technologies required for production, such as embedded high voltage, embedded nonvolatile memory, RF-SOI and mixed signal CMOS, etc., which plays a crucial role in the widespread application of smartphones, smart home devices and emerging electronic devices. Lianhua Electronics believes that the new fabs will meet the growing demand in these markets and help alleviate the structural shortage of 22/28nm process capacity.

Undel Chairman Hong Jiacong said that he was very happy to expand the operation of UWEI in Singapore's 300mm wafer fab, which will further diversify UWEI's manufacturing capacity. Over the past 20 years, Singapore's perfect infrastructure, industrial chain and talent resources have benefited UWEI. Singapore Economic Development Bureau Chairman Dr Ma Xuanren Ma pointed out that UWEI has played an important role in Singapore’s semiconductor manufacturing industry and welcomed and supported UWEI for continuing to expand its production capacity and R&D investment.
