In 2015, the U.S. Department of Justice/Judgement Aid, the Association of Prosecutors and the Center for Court Innovation, identified neighborhood courts as 2015 criminal justice innovation. This form has been copied in many places in , , and has also attracted interest in other jurisdictions across the country.

Some neighborhood court cases are ruled, and the person involved is usually asked to pay "community compensation." The funds then gathered to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office and provided grants to community organizations through the Neighborhood Justice Fund to improve safety, livability, and community cohesion in the city of San Francisco. As of 2019, as many as 78 grants were issued to community organizations through the Neighborhood Justice Fund.

The 11 community organizations that received grants this year include the San Francisco-Shanghai Association, the Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco, the Boys Girls Club of San Francisco, the Cameron House, the Chinese Newcomers Service Center, and the Asian American Women’s Resource Center.
