The number one wafer foundry in the mainland SMIC recently announced that Dr. Jiang Shangyi will serve as the company's third category independent non-executive director , which will take effect from now on, and the Taiwan industry is shocked.

Jiang Shangyi will receive US$40,000 in annual cash remuneration, 187,500 available for subscription common shares, and 187,500 restricted shares at SMIC.

Jiang Shangyi is 70 years old. He received a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from NTU in 1968, a master's degree in electronic engineering from Princeton University in 1970, and a doctorate in electronic engineering from Stanford University in 1974.

After graduation, Jiang Shangyi worked for Texas Instruments and HP. In 1997, he served as the deputy general manager of TSMC's R&D, and later served as the co-operation director (CEO) of TSMC. After retirement in 2013, he served as the consultant of TSMC's chairman Zhang Zhongmou for two years.

As a veteran of TSMC, Jiang Shangyi once led TSMC to independently develop, from 0.25 micron, 0.18 micron, 0.15 micron, 0.13 micron, 90 nanometers to 65 nanometer generations. He also participated in 28nm HKMG high-dielectric metal gate and 16nm FinFET technology, stabilizing the status of Tianzi No. 1 foundry factory, and even planning the future for TSMC after retirement.

Jiang Shangyi was respected by TSMC employees as " Jiang Dad " and was once considered the best successor to Zhang Zhongmou.

TSMC stated that Jiang Shangyi serves as an independent director of SMIC and has informed Zhang Zhongmou in advance that his main responsibility is corporate governance and he believes that he will not do anything that harms TSMC's interests.
