4K (UHD) panel is becoming the mainstream of high-end TVs. When will the 8K that succeeds is emerging? DisplaySearch predicts that 8K may begin penetrating the market in 2018. Manufacturers from various countries are actively preparing for this, and are expected to win the first place in South Korea and will take the lead in mass production of 8K panels next year.

DisplaySearch Yoonsung Chung, the director of South Korea, posted on Analyst Blog on the 15th that the shipment of 4K TV panels increased from 63,000 groups in 2012 to 19 million groups in 2014. IHS estimates that the market penetration rate will double to 15% this year, and will increase to more than 30% in 2018, entering the maturity stage.

Generally speaking, after the new panel resolution is released, it usually has a six-year growth period, and will be replaced by higher resolutions later. For example, HD's growth reached its peak in 2000-2006, and then Full HD (1920×1080) appeared, and HD gradually declined. Full HD led the way from 2006 to 2012, but the subsequent 4K made the Full HD halo fade. From this, it is inferred that by 2018, 8K (7680×4320) may become the protagonist. Moreover, the market share of 4K panels has become high in 2018, and manufacturers also need new technologies to stimulate buying. Therefore, the industry may increase production of 8K in the next two years, with a pre-layout.

However, 8K still has problems such as poor penetration, low brightness, high cost, and large power consumption. Panel vendors may develop more advanced sub-pixel (Sub Pixel) technology to solve the problem. Chung believes that in the early battle of 4K panels, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait manufacturers have started to get the first step. Korean factories do not want the old things to happen again and strive to develop 8K technology. It is expected that 8K panels may be mass-produced next year. Taiwan and Japan are not willing to be outdone and are speeding up their pursuit.
