The oldest among Yunnan destroyers is the Zhaotong ship with hull number 555, which belongs to the 053H1 frigate. 053H1 is an improved model of 053H. It has a length of 103.22 meters, a full load displacement of 1960 tons. It has a 12E390V medium-speed diesel engine, a recharge device and a shaking fin with a speed of 25.5 knots. The ship is equipped with 517 pairs of air alert radars, satellite navigation systems, CTC-1629 Simple Intelligence Center, RBOC passive jamming system, and weapons include Type 79 100mm double-barrel naval gun, Type 76 37mm double-barrel anti-aircraft gun, Upstream-1 Type A anti-ship missile, Type 3200 rocket deep bomb six-link launcher, Type 64 large deep bomb launcher.

The hull number of Zhaotong ship was launched on September 7, 1986 and served in the South China Sea Fleet on March 24, 1987. In the March 14 naval battle that year, China's only air defense ship, 053K frigate, and the Yingtan ship with hull number 531, had only the unusable Lao Hongqi 61 missile. The air defense capability became an urgent problem that the Chinese Navy needs to solve. It happened that the Air Force introduced the Israeli Snake 3 missile and successfully copied the Pili 8 infrared air-to-air missile. Therefore, China improved the PL8 and designed the PL-8H, directly hung the missile hanger on both sides of the Type 76 37mm double-barrel air-resistant gun, forming a 715Ⅱ type shell and gun integrated system. For this reason, the Zhaotong ship entered the Guangzhou Shipyard on August 20, 1988 and modified the four 715 II ammunition and gun integrated system, 347G fire control radar, 347S sea/low-altitude search radar, ZTJ-1 digital multi-purpose commander and JD-5B/7446 navigation system. Later, the surface-to-air type of the PL-9 air-to-air missile was also installed on the 715Ⅱ Type missile and gun integrated system. However, after several years of testing, the Navy believed that this system was too simple and the range of 5 kilometers was too short, so it was not promoted throughout the army. In 2003, the Zhaotong ship was modified and removed.

In 2012, as the situation in the South China Sea became more complicated, the Zhaotong ship entered the factory and transformed it into a patrol ship. Two 37mm anti-aircraft guns were removed from the bow. It equipped the space given up with long-distance directional sound wave emitters and 4 heavy machine gun frames, installed dawn frames and hard assault boats, and added surveillance and video equipment, navigation safety data recording equipment, and satellite communication systems to perform daily duty patrols, temporary inspections, and assault tasks. The patrol ships of this detachment played an extremely important role during the construction of the South China Sea islands and reefs. Not only was the firepower of the naval guns and high attendance rate, but it was also affordable because they were old. It was not worth it to collide with him. The most powerful among Yunnan destroyers is the Kunming ship with hull number 172. It is also the first ship of the 052D destroyer, which can be said to have created an era. The 052D missile destroyer has a full load displacement of about 7,500 tons, a length of about 155 meters, is equipped with a four-sided 346A phased array radar, is equipped with a 64-connected universal vertical launch system, which can launch Haihongqi 9 air defense missile, Eagle Strike 18-on-ship missile and rocket assisted torpedo. It is also equipped with H/PJ-38 130mm single-barrel naval gun, Haihongqi 10 short-range air defense missile and 730 short-range gun, torpedo, and anti-submarine deep bomb, and its combat capability reaches the world's advanced level.

The hull number of Kunming ship 172 was launched on August 28, 2012, and was directly included in the South China Sea Fleet on March 21, 2014 at the dock of the Jiangnan Shipyard. The previous level 052C still uses revolver bullet groove-type hanging air destroyer, and the Kunming ship has ushered in a new era of the Chinese Navy's "chocolate" hanging air defense destroyer. As the first ship of the 052D type, Kunming has been conducting a lot of tests since it was put into service, so it has not appeared much in the media, but it will be a big deal if it appears.

The Kunming ship participated in the "Joint Operation-2014A" live-fire exercise shortly after it was put into service.In 2015, the Kunming ship verified and drove away the U.S. Navy destroyer. In 2016, the Kunming ship broke through the conventional channel for naval surface ship combat effectiveness generation, tested and trained while receiving and installing, and passed the full training assessment with excellent results, forming results such as "Use of a certain type of ship to sea, air, and anti-submarine combat" and "Combat Command and Coordination of a certain type of ship" and other results to the same type of destroyer, constantly breaking through the performance limit. The furthest detection distance of the new radar exceeds 10% of the set distance, and the number of main guns fired more than the peak of long-range shooting of the same type of equipment in the Navy. During the Spring Festival in 2018, the TV station broadcast the scene of the Kunming ship launching three air defense missiles in a row, which was extremely shocking.

During the South China Sea parade on April 12, 2018, the Kunming ship served as the guard of the Changsha ship for the review ship. The Kunming ship participated in more than 20 major exercises, with a total of 29 people making contributions, 24 people were rated as outstanding grassroots cadres, 212 people were awarded the outstanding soldiers, and 3 people were rated as the top ten combat team members of the detachment.

The Yunnan-born destroyer also includes two 056A-class frigates, Qujing and Wenshan. The 056-class frigate is a new generation of multi-purpose light frigate launched by the Chinese Navy in 2012. The ship is 89 meters long and has a full load displacement of 1,500 tons. It is equipped with H/PJ-26 76mm gun, Haihongqi 10 air defense missile, Eagle strike 83 anti-ship missile, and anti-submarine missile, but no hangar is installed. This class of ships focuses on offshore defense operations, patrol and guarding fishing and escort. In October 2019, the Qujing ship participated in practical maritime training and conducted submarine search and attack submarine drills with his brother submarine troops. In April 2020, the Qujing ship participated in the three-dimensional training assessment of the high-intensity air-to-sea and submarine-to-submarine Navy in the Southern Theater Command, and achieved excellent results.

The hull number of Wenshan ship was 623. It was launched from Huangpu Shipyard on December 11, 2018. It was included in the South China Sea Fleet on December 31, 2019. In January 2020, Wu Changkun, deputy secretary of the Wenshan Prefecture Party Committee and secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee of the Prefecture Party Committee, led a delegation of Wenshan Prefecture to visit and comfort all the officers and soldiers of the Wenshan ship.
