(Singapore eye note: Before the New Year of the Monkey, news of the earthquake in southern Taiwan came. I published this Bohemian Lemon’s travel notes on Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and we will pay attention to the cultural landscape of southern Taiwan.)

This is my second visit to Kaohsiung City. The first time was four years ago, I just visited the Love River and Xinjuejiang business district like a dragonfly. So this time I want to take a good walk of this city. The hotel’s service staff suggested that we take a bicycle tour around the Xiziwan area. This is really an excellent suggestion, and it also makes our day of urban tour fun and unsatisfactory.

Kaohsiung is located in southwestern Taiwan. This is a port city. To understand it, we have to talk about its other very strange name - beating dogs. In history, the early indigenous people living in the coastal areas of Kaohsiung were the Makadao people. They had planted fortifications near the beach for a long time to defend against pirates. In this indigenous language, the bamboo forest was called "takau". Later, the Han people called this area in the Makadao people's takust tree, which was transliterated as "beating dogs". In modern times, this name was really indecent, so it was changed to Kaohsiung, just like Keelung's name was "chicken cage".

5 minutes walk from the hotel to MRT Beautiful Island Station . The origin of Beautiful Island is a bit sensitive, you can search for it yourself. The most famous landscape in Kaohsiung, the Dome of Light, was hand-painted by the famous Italian artist Narcissus Master, and was hand-made by the German century-old glass workshop. It took four and a half years to complete the entire dome area. The area is 660 square meters, divided into four major areas: water, soil, light and fire. There are 1,252 windows, each window contains 2 to 9 windows, and each window is inlaid with 3 to 100 small glass. The work presents the process of reincarnation of people in the world, growth, glory, destruction, and then rebirth. When everyone looks up and stares at the dome, everyone can find a place to dream and return to the original place of human nature. It is said that when the Narcissus master completed the Dome of Light, he was unable to speak for a whole day. I made a mistake and he should be exhausted...

From Meili Island Station, take the MRT to the direction of Xiziwan. There are three stops and arrive at the terminal station of Xiziwan. The MRT ticket can be purchased directly at the ticket vending machine in the station. Here I would like to remind you that Taipei's Youyou Card cannot be used for use in Kaohsiung. Before walking from Xiziwan Station to the ground floor, you will see a car rental store in a bicycle rental store. You can buy coupons directly from them and then go out to pick up the car. This way, each bicycle can be discounted by NT$20. After leaving the MRT station, there is a bicycle rental store on the left. I rented two parent-child cars, each of which is NT$100. I can return the car before the store closes at 7 pm. You can also choose to rent a motorcycle, because we have never ridden a motorcycle, and the attractions in this area are relatively dense and there is no particularly long distance, so I chose an environmentally friendly and convenient ordinary bicycle.

After buying a bicycle coupon, I saw the bicycle shop. Don’t rush to pick up the car first. Look to the right side of the MRT Station. Next to the MRT Station is the Dago Railway Story Museum. First visit the small museum renovated by the old station, and then go to pick up the car. The Dagou Railway Story Museum, namely Kaohsiung Port Station, during the Japanese occupation period, the colonists vigorously developed the Dagou Port and opened up transportation routes, so the Kaohsiung Port Railway Station was built. Don’t underestimate such a small station now. Back then, it could be a transportation hub for goods to run across the north and south. Since 1908, Dagou Port has carried out excavation and sand filling projects, which has long established the new terrain of the Kaohsiung Port Station. The railway station has also built a considerable scale of dispatching garages, fan-shaped garages, coal storage tanks, platforms, overpasses and platforms. In addition to being the terminus of cargo, Kaohsiung Port Station is also an important passenger and sea-land transport stronghold. At that time, as long as you buy a combined transport ticket, you can take a passenger ship to Nanyang directly from here.

The station was still in operation at that time. Visitors can watch these decorations and items at close range.

After reading the Dog Railway Story Museum, I took the bike and officially started our day trip to Xiziwan, Kaohsiung, with a map and a GPS. The first stop was that we arrived at Daitian Palace, also known as Hama Xing Da Temple. This was once the seat of the first municipal government during the Japanese occupation period. This temple is majestic and solemn, with carved beams and painted buildings inside. It is an important religious place for believers in the southern region.

Second stop, Qijin. This is a narrow island located on the sea surface. You can take a ferry and get on a boat on a bicycle. However, we still have several attractions to go, just passing by near the pier to see the scenery and not landing on the island.

The third stop, the British Consulate of Beating Dogs. This is the most fun sight to this day trip. Since 1840, with the invasion of the British and French forces of the Qing Dynasty and the signing of the Tianjin Treaty, Taiwan Tamsui and Anping (Kaohsiung) opened as trading ports, and British colonists established the first consulate in Taiwan while beating dogs. This consulate is designed and supervised by the British Ministry of Works. The consulate and his family's official residence was built on the mountain at the entrance of Dagou Port, while the office building was built at the foot of the mountain. There is a hiking trail connecting the office building and the official residence. In 1895, the Qing government was defeated during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki. Taiwan was ceded to Japan. The British Consulate in Taiwan was renamed to the Tokyo Ambassador.

Since merchant ships from various countries need to go to the British consulate to go through various relevant procedures after they arrive at the dog port, various vendors often gather at the gate of the consulate to sell goods and snacks.

Medical missionary The important way for Western colonists to preach in Taiwan is to achieve the purpose of religion by treating patients. This is the first British doctor and missionary James L. Maxwell who landed in Taiwan. He treated a large number of ordinary people in the dog-beating consulate.

Passing the office building, you will see a trail up the mountain leading to the consulate’s official residence.

Shi Wenhou was the first British consul in Taiwan. Under his strong suggestion, the UK transferred the government from the south to Tamsui and then to beating dogs.

rose to the highest point of the consulate, looking at the Dog Port from afar.

The interior of the official residence is now a cultural relics exhibition room, an underground storage room, a souvenir shop, and a British Consular Lady Cafe. Wandering in such a European-style building complex, looking at its historical context, it feels very comfortable and relaxing.

Leave the British Consulate of Beating Dogs and rode down the beach, passing through Sun Yat-sen University, and passing through the Xiziwan Tunnel. It was already noon. The children were hungry and tired, so they found a place to eat and have some rest.

After lunch, I headed to the fourth station of , Banana Pier . There is also a brand of Fisherman's Wharf here. It seems that there is a Fisherman's Wharf everywhere in Taiwan. The most amazing thing here is that there is a very large barbecuefang roast duck restaurant! When we passed by, there were several cars of mainland tourists eating group meals here. They ran from Taiwan to eat a meal in Beijing, and were also drunk.

The fifth stop, Reich Second Art Zone. was once a dock and warehouse, storing various cargo, with trains and ships coming in and out. Now it is opened as a special art zone for people to relax. Visiting the special art zone, you only need to feel the information it conveys, without too much explanation and explanation.

perfect one-day tour of Kaohsiung Port is over. Let’s take a look at the archway of Kaohsiung Port and whether you feel the vicissitudes of history.
