China Daily September 29th. Today, the first World Top Scientists Association Award in 2022 (hereinafter referred to as the "Top Science and Technology Association Award", English: WLA Prize) was officially announced in Shanghai, China.

American computer science and statistician Michael I. Jordan won the "Intelligent Science or Mathematics Award " for his "fundamental contribution to the theoretical basis of machine learning and its application"; German biochemist Dirk Görlich won the "Life Science or Medicine Prize" for his "key discovery of the mechanism of transporting protein between the cytoplasm and the nucleus." The prize of each individual award is RMB 10 million. The two winners will come to Shanghai to attend the award ceremony in early November this year.

Top Science and Technology Association Award was officially announced at the 4th World Top Scientists Forum held in Shanghai in November 2021. It is a science award initiated by the World Top Scientists Association (hereinafter referred to as the "Top Science and Technology Association"), hosted by the Shanghai World Top Scientists Development Foundation, selected from global scientists and benchmarked against the world's highest academic level. As the exclusive donor of the TD Science and Technology Association Award, Sequoia China will support the sustainable development of the award. The award selection adopts a nomination system, and the selection agency is divided into an evaluation committee and a selection committee, both of which are outstanding scientists from relevant disciplines in the international scientific community. The selection committee will review all nomination applications that meet the requirements and generate a list of candidates for each individual award; after review by the review committee, a list of winners will be generated; and then reviewed by the Prize Management Committee of the Ding Science and Technology Association to confirm the final winners.

Chairman of the TD Science Association, Chairman of the Management Committee and Evaluation Committee of the TD Science Association Award, and the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Professor Roger Kornberg said: The TD Science Association Award hopes to explore and discover extremely important basic scientific research results and key discoveries of originality, and is aimed at an outstanding scientist group that is not widely recognized by other awards but deserves recognition. Through unremitting efforts, the Ding Science and Technology Association is confident that this science award, founded in China and founded by social forces, will be built into a world-class science award with significant international influence and credibility. Professor Michael Levitt, Vice Chairman of the Ding Science Association and 2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, announced the list of winners on behalf of the Ding Science Association at a press conference. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Yang Wei, former president of Zhejiang University, and former director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, came to Shanghai to attend the press conference and delivered a speech on behalf of scientists.

Top Science and Technology Association Award exclusive donor and founding and managing partner of Sequoia China Shen Nanpeng said that since this century, global scientific and technological development has brought revolutionary and far-reaching impact, and the development of science is also moving forward in an accelerated manner. Sequoia China has the responsibility and obligation to increase support for cutting-edge science and basic science, and encourage more people to do more "difficult but correct" things in the field of science.

Wu Xiangdong, Executive Chairman of the Ding Science Association and Chairman of the Ding Science Association Award Management Committee, revealed that the 2022 first Ding Science Association Award Ceremony will be grandly held at the opening ceremony of the 5th World Top Scientists Forum in early November. The two winners will be invited to Shanghai to participate in the award ceremony and forum series of activities.

Top Science Association Award—"Intelligent Science or Mathematics Award"

Award winner introduction: Michael I. Jordan, born in 1956, is an American computer science and statistician. He is currently a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science and Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. The main research directions are artificial intelligence , biological systems and computing biology , control, intelligent systems and robots, signal processing, machine learning, etc.

Reason for winning the award: It has made a fundamental contribution to the theoretical basis and application of machine learning .Professor John Hennessy, Chairman of the Selection Committee of the "Intelligent Science or Mathematics Award" of the

Top Science and Technology Association Award and winner of the 2017 Turing Award , introduced: "Professor Michael Jordan is a pioneer in the field of machine learning. By establishing connections between machine learning, probability , statistics and graph models, it has laid the foundation for mathematical and computing for machine learning. The interconnection of these fields not only helps promote research and development in the field of machine learning, but also improves the quality and quantity of research work in related fields."

machine learning is the cornerstone of artificial intelligence. Professor Jordan has worked in the field of machine learning for nearly 30 years and is one of the pioneers of truly using machine learning for specific topic models, such as text analysis and image analysis. In the past decade, the application of machine learning in many fields has been explosively developed, such as autonomous vehicles, X-ray analysis, protein folding prediction, etc., which are inseparable from the theoretical framework shaped by Professor Jordan's research institute.

At the same time, Professor Jordan's contribution to computer science is also reflected in education. He has mentored more than 80 doctoral students and more than 60 postdoctoral researchers, a group currently active in the world's leading academic institutions and leads the industry forward.

Top Science Association Award - "Life Science or Medicine Award"

Award winner introduction: Dirk Görlich, born in 1966, is a German biochemist. He is currently a science member and director of the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Germany. His main research directions are intracellular transportation, nuclear pore complex, input protein and exotransmitter, intrinsic disorder protein and phase isolation, and recombinant antibodies.

Reason for winning the award: a key discovery on the mechanism of protein transport between the cytoplasm and the nucleus and its selectivity.

Protein is the material basis of life and contains the mystery of life activities. "Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. The chromosome is the gene map of the nucleus, which is responsible for encoding all the information of the proteins that catalyze life activities. To create these protein molecules , nucleus must communicate within and outside the nucleus." Professor Randy Schekman, chairman of the "Life Science or Medicine Prize" selection committee of the Ding Science Association Award and the winner of 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine , introduced in his interpretation of Professor Gerlich's results: Academic circles have previously recognized that there is selectivity for protein transport between plasma membrane and the nucleus, but the selection mechanism and passage mechanism are not yet clear. Professor Gerlich was the first to discover the importin responsible for identifying the nuclear protein signal and producing interactions. After the independent research was launched, he continued to obtain a number of basic discoveries, thus completely changing the research in this field.

In the past eight years, Professor Gerlich's paper has been continuously cited by scientists and has shown an upward trend year by year, proving that the importance of its research field and the influence of its research results have been continuously increasing.
