Application season every year, many students applying for quantitative-related majors will ask if Columbia University can apply for several majors at the same time? We often judge whether this can be performed based on the specific situation of the students. Next, the editor of Jidi Study Abroad will analyze the relevant content of the Master of Social Science Quantitative Methods Project for Columbia University. If you need it, let’s learn about it together!

Usually, under the same college in Colombia, you cannot apply for two or more majors at the same time. For example, you cannot apply for majors such as financial engineering, operations research, business analysis, engineering management, etc. under Colombia Engineering College.

However, you can apply for several majors across colleges. For example, while applying for Financial Engineering at Colombia University, we can also apply for Financial Mathematics Department of the Mathematics of the College of Arts and Sciences of Colombia University, and apply for Business Analysis at the College of Engineering at SPS College. While applying for Economics, you can also choose the Financial Economics major under Colombia University Business School, as well as the QMSS project of the Center for Social and Economic Research and Policy.

For example, if you apply for a data science major, you can also consider applying for a QMSS major. In addition, some applicants with liberal arts backgrounds look forward to learning some tech content in the master's degree, and it is highly recommended to consider this QMSS project.

Next, we will introduce the QMSS project in detail:

1. Project introduction

Colombian University's Quantitative Methods major in Social Sciences, Quantitative Methods in Social Sciences, referred to as QMSS, is a master's program jointly opened by the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy of Colombian University. It is a research-oriented comprehensive quantitative project focusing on quantitative research methods and strategies. The biggest feature of this project is its "flexibility".

interdisciplinary integration of the perspectives and research methods of seven major social science disciplines: economics, history, politics, psychology, sociology, computer science and statistics, and the curriculum is very flexible and diverse, aiming to improve students' quantitative analysis capabilities in the field of social sciences. As a STEM project, the project offers 36 months of OPT.

2. Course settings:

9-10 courses, including 5 compulsory courses and 4-5 optional courses.

Compulsory courses:

Quantitative Theory and Methodology Quantitative Theory and Methodology

Data Analysis for the Social Sciences (or Focus equivalent) Social Sciences Data Analysis

Research Seminar I Research Seminar I

Research Seminar II Research Seminar II

Master's Thesis Master's Thesis

Compulsory courses are partial to theory and research. After selecting the topic direction (branch), a master's thesis needs to be completed in the last semester. In addition, the QMSS project has created many research priorities for specific disciplines: Flexible Focus, Data Science Focus, Economics Focus, Experiments Focus.

Flexible Focus: That is, traditional QMSS, students have the widest choice of courses and can choose courses that other colleges are interested in.

Data Science Focus: It was established in line with the wave of big data development. Like the DS master's course, it mainly learns practical courses such as probability statistics, data mining, data science algorithms, data analysis & visualization, modern data structures, natural language processing, data visualization, machine learning, etc., and mainly uses Python and R. QMSS has also established a very close partnership with DSI, the Institute of Data Science at Colombia University. Many QMSS graduates can engage in data science after graduation.

Economics Focus: Mainly cultivates students' knowledge in advanced economics, and the main courses include advanced econometrics, advanced microeconomics, advanced macroeconomics, theory and methodology, and are closely related to the Department of Economics at Colombia University. Students with economics as their direction have the opportunity to adjust their courses to match their background, abilities and goals.

Experiments Focus: It provides courses that train students in the complexity of causal reasoning as well as the design, implementation and analysis of experiments. This direction is suitable for students interested in how to implement the latest policy assessment or learn how to build experiments to understand the causal processes of political, social and economic development models.

It can be seen from this that the QMSS course is more biased towards data analytics and more applied than the master's degree in statistics and economics. It is very suitable for people who have a weak background in mathematics and programming but are interested in data analysis and want to really learn some technical methods. It is also very suitable for people who want to gilt, or those who want to apply for several projects at Columbia University at the same time.

4. Employment situation

QMSS's employment network contains more than 350 QMSS alumni and 300,000 Columbia alumni. QMSS is committed to training students to become data processing talents in the field of social sciences, thereby providing high-quality quantitative analysis research results to employers/academic departments. They are able not only to identify and process problematic data, but also to understand the analytical potential/pitfalls in various situations, so that they can convey the results in a coordinated and consistent manner. Most of them are engaged in research and analysis, and positions include but are not limited to Research Analyst, Consultant, Economist, Business Analyst, Investment Analyst, Research Manager, Project Leader, Statistical Analyst, Data Analyst, etc.

QMSS alumni have worked as consultants after graduation, such as: Morgan Franklin, North South Consultants Exchange, Monitor Group, etc.;

have worked as financial analysts, such as: Bank of America, Citibank, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Blackstone, Blaylock, etc.;

have worked in market analysis research, such as: L'Oreal, Omnicom Media Group, Universal McCann Advertising, etc.;

have entered the entertainment media industry, technology industry, local government and other analytical work.

5. Application requirements:

Application materials:

Transcripts of all previous post-secondary education-Campus transcript

TOEFL/IELTS scores if applicable-TOEFL/IELTS scores, Recommended 100+

Key points: If you apply for QMSS projects, you need to have a relatively solid quantitative background, such as calculus, statistics, matrix algebra, regression analysis, etc. At the same time, you must be able to use some statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, R, Stata, etc. It is recommended to take courses in advance.

6. Admissions in recent years

Number of applicants: 430 people, class size 86 people

[Scores of admissions]:

[Year of admissions for students]:

[Professional background for students admitted]:

Overall, for social science students who are not very hard-core in their own background, not very strong in mathematics and programming background, or students who are interested in data but have not low GPA/TG and other conditions, QMSS is a good choice.

The situation of Columbia University’s social science related projects and the editor of Study Abroad will explain this to you. I hope it will be helpful to you and have a pleasant reading.
