In January 1951, Huang Fazhi went to North Korea as a Chinese People's Volunteer Army soldier and was assigned to the Yang Chengwu 66th Army. In the Battle of Shangganling, his troops held their positions until they finally won the victory.
During the defensive battle, Huang Fazhi and his comrades dug trenches and lay sleepers. The right hand was hit by the sleeper and the ring finger was broken. After simple bandaging, he was injured and consolidated fortifications and was awarded the third-class merit of .
