At around 6:30 am local time on the 18th, staff on duty at the nursing center found Finoti's body hanging outside the window. Finotti lives in a room on the first floor. He tied a sheet around his waist and tried to climb out of the window, but it might have been an accident while climbing the window, which caused him to be fatal lung compression and eventually died.
According to local media, Finotti lived in Papoze town for the rest of his life. He had no children and was unmarried. He refused to let others take care of him in his later years. The director of the nursing center told the media, "We are shocked by what happened. Mario Finoti has been in good health and he has not suffered from any degenerative diseases. We don't know what he is thinking in his mind, and from a psychiatric perspective, he is calm. Last week, his niece spoke to a psychologist via video call to confirm that the elderly's mental state is fine."
A local prosecutor said that no third party was criminally responsible for the incident. At present, nursing center staff have handed over the elderly’s body to their family for funeral.
The mayor of Papoze town said he knew Finoti, and he also said that the old man was passionate about politics and often made excuses to chat in his office. He believes that loneliness may be a motivation for Finoti to escape from the nursing center, as COVID-19 restrictions mean Finoti can no longer go to his office. The mayor also said that since the epidemic, the population of the area he lives in has decreased.
