In five years, a total of 192,000 yuan was donated to poor students in Wachang Village, Xisha Town, Xichou County, Yunnan Province. The person who performed this kindness was Xu Tongchang, a retired cadre of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, who was 91 years old. Recently, the author made a special trip to visit this caring old man.
On the afternoon of March 25, the sun was warm and the author met the energetic old man Xu Tongchang. Speaking of donating funds to support education, Mr. Xu started talking. "Since 2018, I donated 100,000 yuan in the first charity donation. Since then, I donated 20,000 yuan every year to support students in need." Mr. Xu said that during the donation, he alone spent 12,000 yuan to support a college student from a particularly difficult family. Over the past five years, a total of 192,000 yuan has been donated to poor students in the village.
The author learned that Mr. Xu was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu in 1931. Before Nanjing fell in 1937, he was separated from his father at the age of 6. His mother took him and his younger brother and sister to Hankou and Chongqing. He had no relatives and lived a difficult life, suffering from displaced and destruction of the country and family. In old China, he had seen the tragic phenomenon of selling children with grass tags, the tragedy of homelessness and starving to death on the streets, and personally experienced the miserable experience of Japanese fighter jets bombing houses and collapsed. During the interview, the most common sentence Mr. Xu said was "Without the Communist Party, there would be no new China, and there would be no happy life for himself." He said that changing the fate of a person and a family lies in education.
After joining the army in 1949, Xu Tongchang was determined to serve the motherland with the Communist Party. After working in the General Political Department for 20 years, he worked in the local armed forces department for 10 years. In 1979, he transferred to the Supreme People's Procuratorate until he retired in 1991.
Talking about the original intention of donating funds to support education, Mr. Xu smiled and said that he was inspired by Yang Xianyi, another retired cadre of the Supreme People's Procuratorate. Yang Xianyi was seriously ill. When he knew that his life would soon be in the world, he donated the 100,000 yuan pension he had saved to poor students in the mountainous areas. "I also hope to be grateful to the party organization and give back to the society with practical actions." Mr. Xu said.
"Half Xu is very frugal. Although he is 91 years old, he doesn't ask anyone to take care of him. His clothes and mobile phones have been worn by his children. His family is all working-class. The donated donations were also "squeezed" out of his pension." Lin Jin, secretary of the Yangqiao Party Branch, told the author. Because Mr. Xu insisted on donating anonymously, the villagers who did not know the truth thought he was a rich entrepreneur. When they learned that Mr. Xu was a retired party member, they were all moved by his affection for education in the mountains and silent donations for several years.
Give someone a rose, and the fragrance lingers on your hands. Xu Tongchang helped many students with his love. However, he felt that he had just done what a Communist Party member should do, "It was the party that cultivated me. Everything I have now is given by the party. I give back to the money I saved and spend it on poor students is natural and really not worth mentioning."
